Ease of Use:
Pros:Easy to fold and push. And the kids like it, too
Cons:Those darn canopies
The Bottom Line: A great value and a solid performer.
We purchased our Schwinn Sport Utility Double Stroller on eBay because we needed a foldable double for a trip to England and Spain with a my two-year-old son and eight-month-old daughter.
The Schwinn fit the bill and then some, with one minor complaint.
First off, you need to know that this is a serious stroller. It folds like most other umbrella strollers, but it's more than just two of them welded together. That having been said, the Schwinn is still light enough to be carried in one (somewhat strong) arm. It folds quickly, thought the strap that holds the halves together is sometimes hard to locate.
The seats feature a three point waist harness and recline into a good position for sleeping. Reclining the seats takes a bit of patience, though. The seats remain upright with pins that sit on plastic clips. Unfortunately, the pin on the right side of the left seat butts up against the pin on the left side of the right seat, making it awkward to adjust one seat without fiddling with the other.
The Schwinn's three handles telescope, which comes in most handy when trying to fit the stroller in a trunk, which it does with surprising ease. I was stunned when the stroller fit into the trunk of the medium sized Citroen sedan we rented in Spain, And there were even a few inches to spare.
Despite its size, the Schwinn rolls and turns very smoothly. It does a respectable job on rough terrain, though the weight of two kids makes that a tough task anyway.
The only flaw in the Schwinn design comes with the individual canopies that flip behind each seat. Each canopy is framed on each side by a thin metal rod that tends to get caught up in the frame each time you fold and unfold the stroller. All four of the canopy rods on our stroller have been bent repeatedly and one of the clips used to tie the canopy to the rod has broken off. In addition, the canopies offers little protection when the seats are reclined as the child's head sticks out behind it.
I'm considering removing the canopies altogether.
Each seat features a storage basket underneath and these are best accessed by unfastening one of the clips that hold the basket to the frame. Each seat also features a small pouch that attaches to the back via pair of snaps.
Despite the poorly designed canopies, this stroller is great value for the price. It compares quite favorably to many other more expensive doubles that aren't as easy to fold, maneuver or fit into a car trunk.
