| hyvonen's Full Review: Sunfire True Sub MK II Subwoofer Speaker |
Notice, that (since there is no review for it) this is a review for Sunfire True Subwoofer Junior! I dare to say, though, that some of the things I say probably hold for larger Sunfire subs. But keep in mind that I haven't heard the 'big brothers'.
Sunfire is famous of 'tiny' subwoofers. The subs have patented Bob Carver designed power amps that can produce MASSIVE amounts of power to the small sub elements - the junior has a 1.2kW amplifier (the bigger ones have a 2.7kW amp).
Why is this important? When the subwoofer element moves, it also moves a certain 'amount' of air with it - the bigger the element and the further it moves, the more air is moving. The loudness of the sound directly depends on the amount of air moving - or volume of air ('volume'). The smaller subwoofer element, the more it has to move to produce a 'loud' bass. This is the basis of Sunfire subs - the elements are small but they _MOVE_. To move a small element a long way in a small enclosure, you need a powerful amplifier. So that's the basic idea behind Sunfire subs.
I bought this sub because 1) I wanted low bass, and 2) I didn't have room for a big sub. The Sunfire Junior fits in less than 10x10x10 inch cube, and the frequency response goes all the way down to at least 28Hz. Also, I got mine for $700. I'm playing it with Klipsch Quintet speakers - small speakers that have an amazing sound quality, and fit anywhere, but only go down to about 100Hz. The Sunfire Jr. complements them perfectly, completing this minimalized idea of a home theater of mine.
The other sub I was looking at was REL Strata II - I've heard it's an amazing little sub, going all the way down to 20Hz, with that little 60-100W amp. I've been looking for it from Ebay, but amazingly enough: no-one has _ever_ been selling one there! (I wonder what that means.......) Never mind, it's bound to be at least $1300 - new ones being more expensive.
The bottom line: my Sunfire True Subwoofer Junior has filled all the requirements. The bass response could be better - pure, distortion-free and more powerful. But the Sunfire Jr. handles my material more than adequately, and I have to love how tiny and cute it is.
Final word: small and adequate, if a bit expensive. A pocket sub for anyone. Recommended!
