| supahonda's Full Review: Sylvania 6419TA 19 inch TV |
I had been looking for a TV for my bedroom for a long time, and I found that most of the Sony's, JVC's and Toshiba's I was looking at cost an arm and a leg! I just wanted a nice little TV that would go on top of my dresser, just for watching TV before I went to sleep. I finally decided to go look for a brand of TV I hadn't heard of before, because I figured they would be fairly cheap. I set off to my local Canadian Tire (hardware store in Canada, they have a nice little electronics section). I looked around for a couple minutes, until a found this TV, the Sylvania 19" 6419TA 19. The first thing that came to my mind was, "Who the hell is Sylvania?" But then I saw the price tag, and decided "what the heck, it can't be that bad." And in fact, it wasn't that bad! This is the best little TV I could find for under $145CND (with the exchange rate now, probably $65US!)
First of all, the TV is very light weight, and I had no problem carrying it upstairs into my bedroom. I also found that it was very easy to set up. Anyone could set up this TV! After I set it up, I turned it on, ran through the channel selector. I was suprised at the lack of features this TV had, but who needs Digital Reality Creation (DRC) in your bedroom?
The picture quality was better than I thought it would be. Obviously, it cannot compete with any of the high end exoensive TVs on the market, but for the price, the quality is amazing. The picture was sharp and there was no distortion around the edges, which I found with a lot of curved screens. There is not as many inputs and outputs as I would have hoped for, and you can hook up a basic VCR easily to this TV, but don't expect to find an S-VIDEO input anywhere. There is also a headphone jack on the front of the TV, which is perfect for the bedroom, when you want to watch TV and your partner wants to get some sleep.
There have been a lot of complaints with the sound quality of this TV, but I havn't really noticed anything aweful about it. I mean, you get what you pay for. I have a pretty good ear for picking up low quality sound, and while this TV put out a below par sound level, it really didn't bug me because once again, it was just for the bedroom! One thing about the sound did bug me though, and it wasn't even when the TV was on! Whenever I turned my TV off, it would make a fairly annoying humming sound that would last for either minutes, or sometimes days! I was so angry sometimes, that I would unplug it because things like that can really get under my skin!
The remote is small and easy to use, with all the basic functions needed to operate the TV. I has all 10 # buttons, a power button, display, channel return, menu, exit, sleep timer and a "game" button, which is used for hooking up a video game system. Basically, it's a nice remote that I have lost under piles of clothes on many occasions.
Overall, this is a great TV for a really low prices, and I have learned to trust Sylvania, even though I still have no idea who they are or where they are from!!
