romasuave's Full Review: Manhunt for PlayStation 2
Coming to you from Rockstar Games, the makers of the great Grand Theft Auto Series comes this game called Manhunt. You are a pawn in a sick hunting and killing game, all involving humans. The game is filmed on camera and it is a very gory and brutal reality show. If youve seen The Running Man it is very much like it, brutal and sick. Its great. You get to unleash your anger and fury on unsuspecting hunters whose mission is to hunt you down and kill you.
Your character is a bald headed thug who has to follow instructions and directions from the voice of the films director (sounds like Robert Loggia). In addition, there are intermittent text clues on the screen to tell you what each item does and what controller keys perform what action, a very timely and helpful tip. The purpose of the game is to eliminate as many hunters as you can on your way to the end, no easy task.
The game gives you 2 difficulty levels, Fetish (for normal) and Hardcore (for hard). I havent tried the hardcore but given the challenge posed by the normal level I would stick with that until Id get extremely good at the game, normal is enough for anyone.
The game takes place in a town, all takes place during nighttime, which plays a key role. If you want to succeed in this game you have to be very stealthy and make good use of dark shadows. There are 2 ways to kill a hunter, the conventional face to face combat, which usually takes a quarter to half your strength, or the better way, sneaking up from behind unsuspecting hunters and using various items to kill them. In the beginning you make use of plastic bags, glass shards, a bat and a crowbar to complete the killing, each successful killing is displayed as a closeup brutal murder.
You have to be very alert, quick and clever to lure the hunters or to avoid them. Once they spot you they can come in droves to find you and fight you. The shadows are the only things that can save you from a gang of hunters that have spotted you, once dispersed you can sneak up behind one and take him, and slowly plot the next killing. Hitting or banging against objects like walls or garbage cans are an effective method of getting the hunters to you.
Havent reaches the ending, although I dont expect it to be much of anything, just a typical film montage of what this whole scenario of killing was good for. The fun is in the gameplay and not the results.
Good:
Rockstar Games have always produced lifelike graphics in their GTA games. This game is no exception. The movements are fluid and the controls are simple to figure out. The graphics are very good, scenery and objects are very real, the fighting controls are simple enough to figure out and the purpose of the game is drawn out for you and will take you but a minute to figure out how to succeed in the game. Very good voice acting, very raw and uncensored to please the adult sickos in us. I like the fact that this is a thinking mans game as well as a figthing game. If you are not devious and clever you wont be able to get the bad guys, the game presents many opportunities for you to be stealthy, you just need to use your noggin and find them. The sound effects are good, walking on rustling brush or kicking a can sounds real, good depth to the sound as it comes closer and farther away from you. Overall a fun, clever and devilishly entertaining game.
Bad:
I stress heavily....THIS GAME IS NOT FOR KIDS. It is rated M but that perhaps is not enough. There is very strong language in this game, your typical swear words, the killing is very vivid, close up and excessively graphic, there is one scene where a hunter is watching a porn movie and the sounds coming from it are very suggestive. In short, a game for strong stomached adults who can take language and bloody action in a game. My major gripe about this game is the patience you have to display, in addition to the repetition of close up killings. When you lure hunters into the shadows it can take them a while to investigate the scene and that can make a gamer very antsy, feels like close to a minute in some instances, especially when 2 or more hunters come looking for you. When you come up behind a hunter and get ready to kill him, virtually the same footage is used for the killing, with the exception of weapon used, the hunters appearance and the location, the killing is conducted in the same fashion with the same movements, that could have been improved, a different action of killing. My last gripe is when you are in the shadows and a hunter is looking for you, sometimes the hunter does not return to his post, instead he continues into the shadow to the other side. When he does that he brushes up against you and spots you and will begin fighting you, it is very hard to predict when a hunter will do just that, so guess hiding in a shadow in a corner or right against the wall would be the safest bet.
They just killed Cash. Now, they want to kill him again. America is full of run down, broken rust-belt towns where nobody cares and anything goes. In ...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
