Teac CD-X8 CD Shelf System: Nice Sound in a Pretty Package

Review by Rudi Xeno
Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Sleek, small & stylish with surprisingly good sound
Cons:Sub woofer must be left on. No CD tray open/close on remote.
The Bottom Line: A surprisingly good little unit for the price. And, if great looks are important this could be for you.
We recently redesigned and refurnished my daughter's bedroom and were looking for a compact stylish looking CD Stereo System to replace the unsightly boombox that had been there.

At 9 years old, it was no longer enough that the unit play her Hillary Duff CDs. Our daughter now demands cool looks. And we wanted something that while providing nice sound didn't overwhelm the furniture in the room. We also didn't want to break the bank.
On a visit to Overstock.com I found the Teac CD-X8 CD Shelf System. Sleek, compact and definitely stylish it looked like just the thing we were looking for. And, the price was an incredible $84! It was so inexpensive that we almost didn't order it. But I figured, we can always send it back, right?
Out of the box the unit which comes in four pieces (main unit, two wafer thin speakers and a sub-woofer)looks beautiful. The remote control feels substantial and is full functioned. Really appreciated was that the remote comes with battery already installed.
Set-up was surprisingly simple owing to what I think is one of the best Owner's Manuals I have ever read. It's a good thing too, because the set-up is a little unconventional.
The main power source for this unit is to the sub woofer. The speakers, and the main unit (the CD/AM/FM Tuner) attach to the sub woofer. In order to operate the unit the sub woofer has to be powered up. The main unit also has an on/off function that can be controlled from the unit itself or from the remote control.
The only advantage I see to this type of set-up is that it leaves the main unit and shelf speakers looking amazingly free of wires when the sub woofer is appropriately hidden somewhere on the floor. The disadvantage however is that any functions that require external power (the clock timer) only work if the sub woofer is left powered on. A little odd. Leave it on!
While the unit can be used as either a shelf or wall mounted system, we opted for the shelf set-up.
The unit plays CDs (no MP3s) and has an AM/FM Tuner section. Functions can be selected either by pressing a bubble type button on the main unit or with the remote. Since the main unit is very light and small, I recommend using the remote. My daughter isn't really very interested in listening to FM, so the unit is generally left on the CD function anyway. The CD tray (window) can only be opened by pressing the open/close button on the main unit. Would have been nice to have that function on the remote. There's an AUX function if you care to connect another device to the unit (a TV perhaps or a DVD player). Connection is via the usual RCA pin cords. We haven't tried it yet.
Surprisingly robust! The inclusion of the sub woofer here really makes this unit sound substantial. The wafer thin flat panel speakers are bright, clear and not tinny at all. Adjustments for the bass and treble can be tweaked using the remote control. I was able to really crank up the volume without experiencing any distortion.
Impressive for a unit this small and inexpensive. For a child's bedroom or a small office it's all that you need unless you're an audiophile
