| poshgirl850's Full Review: Sylvania 6719DC 19 inch TV/VCR/DVD Combo TV |
At first, I thought the TV/DVD/VCR combination was a really convenient, wonderful idea. I had an easy time getting it set up because it was nice not to have to set up the VCR and DVD player separately. Some of the reviews I have read said that it was a good value, and at first it seemed that way. But now that I have had this thing for almost 2 years, I have to say that this was not a good value at all. As someone who works with a lot of video equipment, I can tell you that it is indeed worth it to pay a little more on things like TVs, DVD players, and VCRs because a good quality one of those may seem a little expensive at first, but in the long run is probably the best deal because they will last a long time. And this, indeed, was not worth it.
My set was just over one year old when I first started having problems with it. The first thing that went wrong was the VCR broke and started eating my tapes. Earlier I said that I work with a lot of video equipment, and that is because I'm majoring in TV Production. I've had VCRs eat tapes before, and I know it's a very simple thing to fix. But I didn't know how to take apart a TV/DVD/VCR combination. So I called Sylvania's help line, hoping someone could tell me how to open the thing up, and had to put up with the absolute worst customer service I have ever had to deal with. Their representatives are not qualified to ask anything more than "Are there batteries in the remote?" and "Is it plugged in?" and if it's anything more complex than that, they simply refer you to an authorized repair station. It took me over an hour to even find out where the closest repair shop was. It took forever before I could talk to anyone, and at one point I was even hung up on! And since this was just after the warranty expired, I was immediately suspicious that they were just after money. And, of course, the nearest repair shop told me that the problem was something far more expensive than it really was. I actually did have undeniable proof that they were indeed lying to me too, but that's another story all together.
Not even a year after my VCR broke, my DVD player quit working all together. At first I thought the lens was just dirty, so I tried running a lens cleaner through it. That didn't help anything at all. And I am not about to go through the absolutely ridiculous ordeal to get it repaired again.
Like I said earlier, I major in TV Production so of course my DVD and VCR player get a lot of use so it is a huge inconvenience to me for any of them not to work. I've had VCRs that have work perfectly fine for almost 10 years, so for this to have so many problems after only almost 2 years is quite pathetic. Pay a little more for a better brand and have the minor inconvenience of a longer set up, it'll save you some money and a lot of hassle in the long run.
