| big____e's Full Review: Thermador DW44Z Built-in Dishwasher |
I went with the Thermador (DW44ZP model - SS w/ pro-style handle) after opening and closing a bunch at various stores. It latches shut with the authority of a bank vault, and has a very solid feel overall, much more so than most every other DW I looked at (including the even-pricier Viking, etc. ones).
It has a completely uncluttered front panel - just a handle - giving it a very sleek appearance, and of course it blends well with the Thermador range I ended up going with. It was a snap to install (I have done the entire kitchen remodel myself).
The interior is very well thought out, and seems to swallow an inordinately large amount of dishes. Odd-shaped things (say, big baking pans or Gladware containers)can be a little challenging, but that's true of most all models.
Once I finally had it wired up and plumbed, I put some stuff in it and chose the appropriate cycle (switches are on top of the door, concealed when closed). It takes quite a bit less detergent than most, and has an indicator to tell you to add rinse agent. I turned it on, cursed, and wondered why it wasn't going. But when I touched the handle, the gentle rumble told me it WAS on. It's that quiet. Basically, you don't hear it unless it's flushing out all the water.
As for cleaning, it has a rinse-only, normal, and heavy-duty cycle. Only once have I pulled out a dish that wasn't sparkling, and I have never used the heavy-duty cycle. It also has a top-level-only wash to save water on small loads.
The only thing I dislike is that it does not have a cycle indicator on the front panel, so you can't be sure when it's done (again, so quiet). The Bosch units (this is a Bosch w/ Thermador front panel and handle) have a few LEDs.
Overall, a fantastic DW. About 9 months now, and now reliability problems. As a footnote, a few months ago on vacation I was telling a pro chef friend of mine that I was redoing the kitchen and went with Thermador. He said I wouldn't be sorry, they were the best in his opinion.
