| supernova7's Full Review: Toastmaster 7091W 1320 Watts Toaster Oven with Con... |
The Toastmaster Convection Oven-Broiler #7071, sister convection oven and forerunner to the Toastmaster 7091 Toaster Oven with Convection Cooking, was one the first convection ovens launched from the 75 year old Toastmaster, Inc.
Because their specs and design is so very much identical except in one function, toast-broil, I have decided to write about the one convection oven I know a little bit about - the 7071 Oven Broiler. Why? Well, you see, after 18 years of having bought this model, there is no end in sight of its endurance, stability, and efficiency.
It is so similar to the 7091 Toaster Oven that one can very easily write a review on this product and not compromise the hands-on experience and knowledge of either model.
In short these two models, the 7071 and 7091 are the venerable workhorses of the Toastmaster Line of convection ovens and the Blue Ribbon champions of Toastmaster - until the arrival of the microwave.
My mother bought the 7071 almost 18 years ago and paid, I believe, $45. And, it hasnt stopped roasting, baking, or broiling (and toasting) with all the original heating element, wiring, and accessories. The glass door is as clean and scratch-free as the day it was bought at J.C. Penny's. There only is a small scratch accidentally left by an invited dinner guest on the very top of the oven.
CONVECTION DEFINITION:
But first, let us see just what is a convection oven. In essence, a convection oven continuously circulates air around the oven itself to maintain uniform temperature in the oven. It is the very gentle air flow which promotes browning of meats; seals in juices; and decreases cooking.
It works basically on the same cooking principle as a regular oven with the exception of flowing forced air circulation. Unlike the microwave, it does not use radiation to cook and some inconvenience is eliminated.
One example of this inconvenience is to microwave a baked potato - it bakes great, but to nuke two potatoes, increases the cooking time and leaves many times potatoes in need of further nuking.
In a convection oven, this is not the case, it doesnt matter how many potatoes one puts in the oven, cooking time and quality of food remains constant.

Almost 18 years ago, microwaves were beginning to become popular to the public's imagination and desire but die hard housewives who grew up with standard conventional ovens still werent totally convinced about nuking foods.
A happy medium was reached by having counter top convention -broiler ovens promoted, (before the oven-toaster popularity took over). My mom, being a traditionalist in its purist form, decided to go with counter top tradition and purchase the Toastmaster Convection oven-broiler. She didnt quite know what convection meant, but it didnt matter, she has to this day, (she's 93 now), an instinct of what is a good product, and therefore chose the 7071.
WHAT IT CAN DO:
- It can dehydrate food, eliminating moisture from food
- It can bake cakes cookies, but because cooking time is reduced,
it is best to check regularly as to the completion of baked goods.
- It slow cooks food which enables one to cook several foods for
several hours and one can return to the kitchen safely knowing that
the different foods have been thoroughly cooked.
WHAT IT CONTAINS:
- The oven has three rack positions for baking, roasting, and broiling and can
easily hold a 12 pound turkey or several Cornish hens.
- There are two sets of heating elements - on top and bottom of oven.
- On the bake, roast, and slow cook settings, the thermostat will
turn on and off with indicating lights It brings with it a broil pan assembly,
and a bake rack.
- There never came a handle with the oven, which was, its one
most severe set back - and quite dangerous if I may add. There is
virtually no way to draw out the racks or trays without risking a bad burn;
or having a mitt catch fire on its way in or out. I do not know
what the designers were thinking of when they fashioned this
model and it is its one flaw- and so simple to have resolved.
ITS COOKING ABILITY:
We have consistently and regularly roasted, baked, broiled, and occasionally, even toasted in our oven but be aware that if you decide to make toast, youll need to preheat the broiler about 10 minutes before to get it to its right toasting temperature. And then watch it closely, because youll have burned toast before you realize it.
Roasts, chickens, and just about anything else will come out juicy, browned, and tender. If you decide to bake, then make sure its a moist cake mix or dough as the cooking time will be reduced.
Casserole dishes will turn out in just about the same time as do regular ovens with no other particular benefit.
IT'S PERFORMANCE:
Doesn't get too hot at all and wires don't seem to even notice the heat.
Unlike the http://www.epinions.com/content_191129357956 Toastmaster 362B Toaster Oven with Convection Cooking, which I reviewed previously, if you put your hand on the oven, there is no problem. Oh, you'll know it's hot but there's no risk of getting burned. The wires on the 7071 and the 7091 are made to withstand heat and it is recommended that you not use an extension cord which may not be able to withstand the heat which the original wires are meant to do.
Actually, the cavity of the unit itself has a good response time for heating up for baking and roasting, but it does take a lot of time if you're in a hurry to make some toast with the broiler.
I guess that's because it's not a toaster convection oven but rather a convection oven with broiler. Duh!
Well, anyway, it can be used as a toaster just prepare yourself for a wait and I'd say, turn on the broiler about 10 minutes before you need the toast.
This is a work horse if not "the" work horse of Toastmaster convection ovens - and was made to last. It lasts so long that we actually got a microwave unnecessarily because we got tired of waiting for the Toastmaster to go - it's probably never going to happen.
It Cleans Easily with it's nonstick interior! The glass door just doesn't scratch or get stained with grease it seems. The door also opens easily and snaps shut securely.
It's only drawback as stated previously, is that it didn't come with it's own original handle particular and appropriate to the oven design. You are at risk of getting your hand burned or having your mitt catch fire by touching the top broiler element. BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL!
The pull out trays and rack slip fairly easily from the oven cavity and shouldn't cause any mishaps at all. Just be careful your hand doesn't graze the top broiler element.
If you're looking for stability, endurability, and reliability (beyond comprehension) plus excellent cooking qualities, this "work horse" may still be the one for you.
June, 2007. With the deepest regret and sadness I must report that my convection oven finally gave out. Well, actually it was the top heating element and I was too lazy to go try and get another one. Had I replaced the heating element, it would still be going strong. So, after almost 20 years of use, I laid it to rest and turned on my microwave.
Good night sweet oven. And a flight of brownies fly thee to thy well deserved rest. ;^)
