Pros: Small size, sharp HDTV picture, decent sound, perfect for smaller rooms.
Cons: No place to rest a center speaker on top of TV.
The Bottom Line: The Toshiba 42H81 is a perfect choice for smaller viewing rooms. It looks a lot bigger at home than it does on the sales floor.

For almost three years we have had a nice home theater but were still watching movies on a 13-yr-old 27 inch standard TV. With widescreen DVDs that makes for a very small picture. We bought the Toshiba 42-inch HDTV primarily for watching movies on DVD. In our smaller viewing room, with normal viewing distances of 8 to 12 feet, it is just a perfect choice.
The remote is easy to use, and has a light for use in the dark. There are 5 choices of picture size, and now we watch everything in one of the the widescreen formats, even normal TV channels. The TV has a number of options for customization, one being the picture you like best, for contrast, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness. Plus, there are three other built-in ones that can be chosen for different sources.
Our DVD player is an older one, not-progressive-scan, but we are frankly amazed how good the picture is on DVDs. Toshiba doesn't call it progressive scan, but it has that same effect, and even normal sources are amazingly sharper. It has several variations of picture-in-picture, including one where you can monitor 9 channels in addition to the one you are watching.
The TV has a front-panel, one-button automatic focus, plus a nine-point manual color convergence adjustment that is very easy to use and works very well. The front and back have a number of inputs for normal and high-definition sources. All-in-all a fine TV at a good price.
