Here's what you want to know...
Benefits:
- Celeron 2.0 GHz (excellent for word processing, internet, and email)
- 256 MB RAM (adequate for running Windows XP and upgradeable to 1024 MB)
- DVD/CD-RW drive (perfect for watching movies while traveling and great for making CD's or storing lots of data fast...24x/10x/24x)
- 15" XGA TFT screen (huge and bright)
- Toshiba Notebook Maximizer software (you can adjust settings to save battery power and increase efficiency)
- 2 USB 2.0 ports (easy to add a high-speed DVD burner or other drives/accessories later)
- ~6.1 lbs (relatively lightweight for a laptop, although by no means the lightest on the market)
- wireless upgradeable (no integrated wireless capability, but you can add a wireless card to take advantage of wireless internet/computing)
Drawbacks:
- No PS/2 port (meaning you'll need a USB mouse or have to stick with the touchpad)
- 30 GB hard drive (small for today's computers, but not a big deal if you're not storing massive files)
- no floppy drive!!! (you can add an external drive, but that's more money...floppies seem to be on the way out, but a built in drive would have been nice)
- 400 MHz bus (right now a two generations behind the fastest 800 MHz bus...not really noticeable, but something to keep in mind if you're looking at computer speed)
- somewhat flimsy screen (not the sturdiest I've used, but if you are careful, it's fine)
- cooling fan noise (not really loud, but noticeable)
- 1028 x 780 resolution (images not perfectly crisp due to large screen size, but definitely clear enough for frequent use)
I was in the market for a low-budget computer that I could watch DVD's on while traveling and take around campus to do homework. This computer is definitely light enough to carry around and more than fast enough to handle basic tasks such as word processing, internet, email. I purchased it for $799 (before taxes and after a $200 mail-in rebate) and added another 256 MB of RAM for $50 - an amazing price for this kind of laptop! That being said, if you're looking for the latest bells and whistles, this may not be the product for you.
