USB ports - nowadays they're used for so many things - cameras, mice, printers, scanners, memory sticks.  Most new computers come with several USB ports, but older computers might only have one or two.  My old laptop, for instance, has only one USB port and it's in the back of the laptop - not very convenient.

Luckily, if you need more ports than your machine provides, there's a very simple solution.  Simply turn one port into several, by attaching a USB hub.  The one I use is from Tripp Lite, model U222-004-R, and it turns one port into four. 

This particular model is actually called a mini hub, due to its small size.  With its cord tucked into the convenient slot in the back, the entire device is less than 4" long, 1.5" wide, and .5" deep.  Truly, this is a pocket-sized device.  Great for when you're on-the-go.

So how does it work?  The cord ends in a USB connector.  Plug that connector into any USB port on your computer.  The green LED power-indicator will light up, indicating that the device is working.  The device has four USB slots.  So, plug up to four USB devices into it.  You could even plug another hub into one of the hub's ports, turning a single computer port into seven ports.  I wish that each of the four ports had its own LED indicator to show that a device is attached to it.  But it's really not a necessary enhancement - I just think it would look cool.

The device's connector is attached to a very short cable, giving only about 2" of space between the device and your computer.  This is fine, if you're using a laptop.  In fact, the compact size of this device is perfect for travelers.  But suppose you want to use it with your desktop, which is located several feet away from you.  And you want to plug your camera into it.  You'll want your camera to be close to you, not several feet away.  Well, in that case, use the 4' extender cord that comes with this model.  This allows you to bring the device closer to you, convenient when you're using a desktop.

There are no negatives to this device.  Tripp Lite is a brand I trust, and this device has never let me down.  I keep it in my laptop case, for easy access whenever I need an extra USB port.  Highly recommended.
