| mrtotes's Full Review: Ultra Max (ULT31310) USB 2.0 External Drive Case |
I have to say I was impressed when I opened the box - for that price I was not expecting to get the cables included! It so simple 8 screws and the drive is in the plastic case. Plug it in and the fan takes off - it's noisy so I couldn't hack using it next to my main computer where the fan very quietly spins away. Still I've only bought it as a back-up device so noise isn't a show stopper. The power brick is too big - mainly because it's a European plug with adapter rather than a UK plug. The LEDs on the front are too bright for my liking - again as my main computer is in field of view when I'm sat on the sofa at home the LEDs were almost blinding - I had to hide the drive! It's pretty quick no drivers are required (at least on OS 10.3 and OS 10.4 which I tried the drive on) and I cloned my machine's hard disk across in a few minutes. The problem came when I tried to boot my computer from the drive. It isn't bootable unlike many drives. This is a real shame so although it can back-up my data I can't back-up my OS. I keep the drive in a fire safe and unfortunately one day (I'd had it about 3 months and used it about 6/7times) when I picked it up the hard disk fell off the enclosure (!) - both the plastic feet (grey in the photo) had critically failed. The drive still works but now looks even more nasty.
In summary it's cheap and cheerful and if you can stand the noise and bright lights - which next to my sweet looking quiet computer I don't want to - it is a good value enclosure.
