| rgathright's Full Review: Uniden EXP-970 900 MHz - Cordless Expansion Handse... |
Cordless phones are my favorite way to talk. You can easily walk around the house and avoid background noise by moving into another room. An added bonus is that you do not need to use up your cel-phone minutes. I went to my local superstore and found this phone for just $10, two years ago. The package comes with everything you need to plug and play.
How about the range? I can use the phone outside, up to 75ft away from the base inside the house. Unlike 2.4Ghz portable phones that cut out when out of range, the 900Mhz Uniden EXP 970 simply starts to hiss in the background giving you time to readjust the phone to hear your call.
The battery performance is outstanding. I have never used up the NiCd battery even with a 30 minute phone call. The long battery life can be attributed to the lack of LCD display. LCD displays can consume as much as 200ma when lit, draining away precious battery life.
The phone's plain white, ergonomic design makes it easy to fit in your hand or even carry in your pocket. The "talk" button is not easily pressed because of the curved shape of the phone, this makes it ideal for carrying around. The case is made out of very thick plastic allowing the phone to take some big falls (I have dropped this phone dozens of times).
The phone fully assembled and sitting in its cradle weighs about 1lb. Expect to fit it into a space about 6"W x 12"H x 6"L.
According to my Kill-A-Watt meter, the phone consumes just 9 watts during a phone conversation.
Amazon offers replacement battery packs for this phone the ASIN is B000JCUMHK.
Please note the phone I have is not headset compatible.
Installation/Technical Concerns
After you get your phone, the hardest task left for you is placement of the base. The 900 Mhz frequency of the portable phone has a shorter bandwidth allowing it to travel easier through refrigerators, walls and even brick walls resulting in a clearer sound when compared to the newer higher frequency phones (5.8Ghz & 2.4Ghz). In fact, in the modern wireless home a 900 Mhz phone is a wise choice because it will not conflict with your wireless router or other similar transmission devices. However, security features are not built into these phones, making it easier for neighbors to listen-in on your phone conversations.
All these factors taken into consideration, the general rule of thumb is the higher the better. Never place a radio transmission device onto of a large metal appliance like a fridge or washer/dryer, the metal creates an invisible grounding plane which will tend to absorb your radio transmissions.
Features:
-Page/handset locator
-Rocketdial
-10 number memory dial
-900Mhz analog signal
-2.4VDC / 600mAh NiCd Battery pack
-AC adapter
-Telephone line cord
Summary:
My Uniden phone is the best cordless phone I have ever purchased. Two years of solid performance with no battery issues so far. In fact, last Christmas, I gave this phone to several friends as stocking stuffers!
