The thing that impressed me most about this VCR is the ease of setting it up. As with most VCRs in this price range, all of the necessary accessories are included (S-video cable, A/V cable, RF cable, cable box controller, and batteries for the remote), but where this one really shines is the “plug & play” function. Hook your cable or antenna to it, plug in the power, and it automatically programs your channels and sets the correct time.
The play back of pre-recorded tapes is the same as any VCR, put it in and go. The picture and sound were much better than the VCR that I replaced. However, since that was a cheap no-name machine I can’t really say how this system compares with others in its price range. I certainly couldn’t see a difference when I compared it to an identically priced Mitsubishi or a higher priced Sony. All of the play functions are easy to use. It would be nice if the shuttle-jog knobs on the front of the VCR were also on the remote, but the remote still does have good tape controls.
I did not find that many of the advanced functions were easy to use. The remote has lots of buttons that are cryptically labeled and anything that requires accessing the menus is harder than it should be. It’s not that they are hard to learn how to use; it’s just that they aren’t intuitive so you will need the manual handy for a while.
In short, it’s a good quality, feature packed, VCR with a mediocre user interface.
