futahaguro's Full Review: Venta - Airwasher LW14 1.2 Gallon Humidifier
I have been living in Minnesota for 20+ years and have never had a humidifier, much less a humidistat to see what the humidity was. 2 years ago I got a humidistat, if that is what they are called, and found out that my house was averaging 20% humidity! Knowing how nice it is to have humidity in your life I decided it was high time I dropped some money on something that will keep me healthy and comfortable.
Enter the Venta LW14. I had done a good amount of research on the internet regarding cold and warm mist humidifiers but not that many of them had resounding yay's or ney's from user comments. I then checked ePinions and stumbled upon the Venta Air-Washer. It is similar to the Air-O-Swiss but does not use any heating elements to humidify the air. Rather, it just blows air over a drum that rotates in water, which in turn blows the humidified air out the sides. As you can imagine this is a very simple, and stay with me, effective way to humidify the air. The other added benefit, which is huge, is the fact that it is a BREEZE to clean (no pun intended). There are only 3 major parts you need to deal with when replacing the water and cleaning the unit, the top fan shroud, the bottom case, and the rotating discs. That's IT! Also, for this model they recommend cleaning out the water basin once every 10-14 days! From what I have read, that is a MUCH longer time frame than any warm-air humidifier.
So, how does it work you ask? In my ePinion, GREAT! I have it in my 10x12 bedroom where I have 2 temperature gauges and a humidistat. Before the Venta I would normally see 67-68 degrees with about 20-25% humidity with the door open to the other rooms. Now, running the unit from 9 PM to 8 AM it stays at 69 degrees but the humidity goes up to 45-50%!! The added advantages are that I can keep the door closed, whereas before I did not want to since I have radiant heat and there would be no airflow, and the air is also cleaned! This leads me to a point I forgot to bring up. Since the air is drawn in from the top, blown over the water, and sent out the sides the dust particles are also controlled. You are getting two units in one.
The noise of the unit on the 1st speed is no more obtrusive than running a small fan. I am a pretty light sleeper and am used to it already. There is a second speed but I see no need for it in my small room.
Overall I highly recommend this unit because of its simplicity, ease of use, long warantee, and solid construction. If you are in the market for a humidifier I would suggest taking a look at the Venta Air-Washer.
