Pros: Great image quality, convenient setup, great price for pan/tilt
Cons: ActiveX control forces viewers to use Microsoft OS and browser, no JPEG still images
The Bottom Line: Buy it only if you intend to always view from a machine running Microsoft Internet Explorer and Windows and have permission to install an ActiveX control.
shaboopee's Full Review: Veo Wireless Observer Network Camera
This camera has excellent picture quality and the pan/tilt feature is very handy. I had no problem setting up my routers to make it visible from the Internet (http://63.227.59.66/ user:"mick", pass:"mick"). It is great that it just connects to my LAN and doesn't require a PC to be running.
However, I was frustrated that it only allows a client browser to get images via an ActiveX control. The ActiveX control won't work (i.e. you can't access the camera) unless you:
1). Are using Microsoft Windows,
2). Are using Microsoft Internet Explorer,
3). Have administrator privileges to install the ActiveX control (not the case at my workplace),
4). The camera and your routers are configured so that its HTTP server is accessible externally via port 80 (this is inconvenient if you have a single static IP address and want to host a different server or appliance on the default port ... it also means that you can't have more than one Veo Observer per external IP address).
Also annoying is that you can't have it serve single static images (i.e. JPEGs). In order to glimpse what the camera is pointed at, you have to load its intro page (lots of graphics including a big logo and picture of the camera), pick a language, wait for the ActiveX control to load and initialize, log in, and wait for the video stream to start. The streaming video uses a lot of bandwidth (undesirable if your workplace monitors your Internet usage).
Lastly, it does seem prone to crash (as other reviewers noted). Mine hasn't crashed much lately but for awhile it was crashing almost every day (perhaps there was a bad worm going around?)
It would be a great camera if Veo would listen to its customers and improve the firmware (which can be downloaded from their website and loaded into your camera), however my complaints went unanswered (aside from the stock "make sure you download and install the latest firmware" reply).
