Chop it UP - The Viking Food Processor
Written: Oct 16 '05 (Updated Mar 08 '06)
Viking VFP12 12 Cups Food Processor -
I have had this for food processor now for a little over six months and I do really like the power it has. It has extremely sharp blades and cuts right through anything I put in it! Making pizza dough has never been this easy and no longer are there surprise chunks of garlic in my humus! It has an easy dial with a two speed motor including a pulse function and this thing is heavy duty!
I bought this unit because my Kitchen Aid was wearing out from the abundance of cheese grating that I had put it through for years. I needed something more powerful and this sturdy 625 watt heavy duty machine did the trick. Even with the industrious motor, this is a surprisingly quiet appliance and it does not dance around the counter while trying to grate cheese.
The Viking food processor is constructed with a heavy duty bottom made of die cast metal and has wheels in the rear for easy maneuvering around the counter. It is a tough machine and seems to be heavy duty enough to stand up to even professional use.
The manufacturer suggests hand washing the accessories, but if you have read any of my other reviews, you know that I do not hand wash and that anything I buy goes through the dishwasher. The pieces have been used on a daily basis and have stood up to many months of dishwasher cleanings with flying colors. In addition, the machine itself is an all in one piece and easy to clean just by wiping down. The cord stores itself in back.
This food processor comes with both a 12 cup bowl and a smaller 3 cup work bowl. It is a little tricky to get the smaller work bowl put together the first time because it fits inside the larger work bowl. I think this is kind of a stupid design because my whole need for a second bowl is because the first one is usually in the sink dirty.
This also comes with a storage container for all of the blades. Along with the pusher for the appliance and the extra 3 cup work bowl, you also get a knife and dough blade, a reversible disc for thick or thin slicing/shredding, and a julienne disc.
The major problem with this food processor is that the diameter for the cutting discs is not as wide as the large food processor bowl. This is insane because when chopping the end pieces of carrots, etc. fly right off the edge of the disc and go into the work bowl unchopped. ????why????
The Viking food processor comes in an array of finishes including red, cobalt, graphite gray, stainless, black, and white. I bought the stainless and like the ease in which it wipes clean. It is attractive enough to leave on the counter and heavy enough that you will not want to store it away.
Although more expensive than some other food processors or small appliances, this machine will last for years and is true to the Viking name with high power. This machine does come with two warranties. There is a one year warranty that covers the complete machine and then a ten year warranty on the motor itself.
