Wahl Designer 6. Buzz that barber away.
Written: May 17 '00 (Updated May 18 '00)
Pros:Quickly pays for itself.
Cons:You are not a professional
So you think it takes a professional to give you or your child a haircut? I guess the answer could go either way depending upon the hairstyle. If you wear your hair cut short and to a uniform length your ship may have come in.
The dog days of summer in Connecticut feature hot and very humid weather. During these days your body sweats from the exertion of just standing still. Pools and air conditioners are sought out as the bastions of comfort from the heat's onslaught. It is during these same hot months that my son plays baseball and summer hockey. Now my son may not be a professional athlete but he does have a head of hair that would be the envy of most people. He is blessed with thick course hair that seems to grow at an amazing rate. I'm sure his hair doesn't grow any faster than anyone else but I have to pay to get his cut.
The problem.
My son likes to keep his hair cut short. When it touches his ears he starts to get antsy for a trim. If it hangs over his ear the cut becomes an obsession. At the speed his hair grows that meant a trip to the barber once a month. That's twelve trips a year at $10.00 plus tip per trip or $132.00 per year.
The combination of summer's heat and sporting sweat had made for a daily hair washing routine. It seemed as if my son was always at a ballpark, hockey arena or in the shower. There had to be a better way and as luck would have it many of his friends were getting their hair cut short. Compared to what my wife spends on her hair in a year the $132.00 is peanuts but then again my wife did not decide that a buzz cut was the summer solution. Fortunately my son did and we went out in search of a set of hair clippers.
The solution.
We searched around and decided upon the Wahl Designer 6. The Designer 6 comes packaged with six comb attachments, a comb, oil and instructions. At the cost of around three haircuts the Wahl Designer 6 was sure to pay for itself in a matter of weeks.
The six comb attachments provide the ability to vary the length of the hair cut from 1/8" to 1" although I never tried using any more than one at a time for a uniform overall length.
Even with my son's thick head of hair the Designer 6 had no problem. I would use a water spray bottle to dampen his hair and then comb it up into a mini spike look. Then using the ½" comb I was able to give him a buzz cut in less than ten minutes in the comfort of my home. No appointments, no driving, no tips just ten minutes at my convenience and as the cuts were free we trimmed the hair every two weeks.
The advice.
If you are on a budget, have multiple children or are looking to reduce your trips to the barber a Wahl hair trimmer may be for you. I have seen professional hair stylists do amazing things with electric trimmers but remember you are not a professional. If you are looking to give you or your child a buzz cut this solution may be for you.
I have to warn you, these are a cutting tool be careful. You are not playing with an axe or chainsaw but these babies can easily produce hair disasters in addition to the nice looking hair trims. I know from experience. One night halfway through a cut I took the comb off to clean the blades. When I went to cut again I forgot to put the comb back on. Let me tell you the result was a very short patch of hair, luckily on the back neckline.
Overall the Designer 6 is a great set of hair clippers that if used correctly can and will pay for themselves many times over. If you need a professional style see a professional, if a nice looking buzz will do get a Wahl.
