kfong99's Full Review: Waring WMK300 Professional Belgian Waffle Maker
My wife gave me this for my birthday. She was reluctant to give me a waffle maker out of fear that it would be yet another small kitchen appliance that would never be used (and just take up space.) After a year of ownership, this waffle maker has been in use almost every available Saturday morning.
Note: We have a refurbished unit and could not tell it apart from brand new...it works great.
BUILD:
The construction is very solid...you can lift the unit from any place and not feel like any part is being stressed out (except your wrist!).
The connections have excellent tolerances, the movements are smooth, and the iron locks securely when flipped and rotated.
The stainless steel exterior looks very professional and is a breeze to clean.
The internal iron is non-stick...you almost don't need to clean it. Cooked waffles come out easily with the help of a fork.
The power cord has a very heavy duty skin and is easy to clean.
The base is heavy with rubber feet, so it provides a very low and safe center of gravity.
DESIGN AND OPERATION:
The design is the type you might see in a restaurant or gourmet ice cream shop: you pour batter in, close the top down, and flip the unit over. This design ensures that the entire surface area of the iron is used, efficiently yielding a complete and crisp waffle. The design is not quite space-saving, as it is meant to be kept out in use on the countertop.
If you used excess batter, it spews out one side (usually) and into the included aluminum drip pan, which can be removed and cleaned. The design is quite stable and fairly dummy-proof. There are 2 controls: an on/off switch and a heat intensity knob. There is one light indicator to tell you if the iron is ready. Here is the strange part... there is also an audible beep that tells you if the iron is ready AND when the waffle is done. This is strange because in order to do this, the unit must be able to detect if the waffle iron is empty or in use...and it has never been wrong from my experience, regardless of my attempt to 'fool' it.
The iron opens up and stays beyond 90 degrees, and I have never had the experience of the iron coming down by accident.
WAFFLE COMMENTS
The unit consistently cooks a waffle evenly and quickly.
Waffles need to be eaten right away or else they will become soft. If you are making 4 consecutive waffles (and assuming everyone is waiting to eat them at the same time), everyone should have crispy hot waffles. But beyond 4 waffles, softness will set in on the earliest-made waffle. My suggestion is to give the earlier waffles to the less picky eaters...usually dad. My guess is that long-lasting crispiness may be a function of how much sugar is in the batter.
The most common mistake is to underfill the iron, resulting in an unattractive waffle. If you use the included dispenser cup, this should be less of a problem.
I have made various waffle recipes with this unit and have had a good amount of success with all of them. If you have access to Trader Joe's, try their pancake/waffle mix, available in plain or whole-grain.
CONTENTS:
The package contains:
- Waffle Iron with heavy duty non-removable power cord
- Measuring cup to dispense waffle batter
- Aluminum drip pan
- Instruction/Recipe Book
All articles are encased tightly in an expanded polystyrene body and can probably be shipped safely as-is.
WARNINGS:
Despite the temptation, do not use this unit as a George Foreman Grill...and do not use a non-equipped George Foreman Grill to make waffles. Unfortunately, this means more insane small kitchen appliances to take up space in your cabinet.
