rutkiller's Full Review: Washburn D10S Acoustic Guitar
Approximately 4 years ago, I made the decision that I wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Of course, it is difficult to do that without actually owning a guitar. I met with my instructor and I was pointed towards a variety of basic acoustic guitars, ranging from $200 to $500. Not knowing how to play and not knowing if I was going to stick with it, I elected for the lower end of the cost spectrum and I picked up the Washburn D-10S. I purchased the guitar at Sam Ash and I paid $220 for it.
After I worked through my lessons and began playing, I began to slowly realize that this is a "beginner" guitar. I am by no means the next Eddie Van Halen, but as someone with just a few years of experience, I can spot the shortcomings of this guitar. With that being said, I do believe that I made the right choice for my first acoustic guitar. I found that learning to play was fairly easy on this guitar. Though I had nothing to compare it with at the time, I see now how it stacks up.
As the other reviews mention, this is a solid spruce top, 6 string guitar, with mahogany sides, back and neck. The guitar has a beautiful rosewood fretboard with dot inlays, and comes with Grover-style tuners.
The guitar sounds decent. My instructor was using a high-end gibson, so next to his guitar, this sounded pretty weak. I noted that the other reviews suggest it has a very "bright" sound. I find that my guitar is the complete opposit. My guitar is very deep, and at times, sounds very dull. I have properly tuned the guitar and I still notice the over-powering bass. I've tried a number of different strings and I still get the same results.
I have also noted that the action on my guitar is very high. One of the other reviewers wrote that his Washburn came with wedges to put under the bridge to adjust the action. My guitar did not come with these wedges, however, I would not need them anyway. The action is too high for me. Perhaps it is my style of playing or personal preference, but I find it much easier to play other acoustic guitars.
As mentioned above, this is a very handsome guitar. In the $200 to $300 price range, this guitar cought my eye because of its quality looks.
I have enjoyed this guitar for the last 4 years, but as I progress, I find myself wanting something better.
