Weber Genesis Silver B (LP) Grill., We Have Had A Wonderful Relationship
Written: May 23 '07 (Updated May 16 '08)
I have had the Weber Genesis Silver B (LP) Grill in my back yard for about three years. I believe this its fourth summer. It has been our work horse every summer for quick to prepare summer meals. It has also been an emergency source for cooking in the dead of winter when we had too much to cook and heat up when our oven went down with 40 people over the house. We do also use it in winter for a nice steak or lamb chops.
Some Basics
I purchased mine through my local Home Depot. It was already assembled so I didn't have to deal with that and spent more time with a "Weber" booklet that detailed the best ways to use the grill and had some fine recipes too. I loved that book but somehow lost it over the years.
I did have to place the tank onto the bottom area of the grill. It has easy to mount hardware with a wing nut but it's awkward to reach under and set the nut. I have to change mine two or three times a year. The spring action in that hanger is supposed to help gauge how much fuel is left in the tank. It never worked well for me. I could not figure out by the weight how much more fuel I had left. It is easy to note however, when the tank is running way down. There is an obvious difference in weight.
Good Design
I like the design of this liquid propane grill. On the right is a shelf where the three knobs to adjust the three stainless steel burners are located. Next to them is a click type button to ignite the cross over burners. Crossover simply means that once I light the closest burner the other two , the middle and that closest to the back, will light up without any more clicks.
I had a little trouble with the igniter for a month or so when it would not "snap" or "click". I never found out what the problem was because it suddenly started working just fine and continues so today. I was using a wooden stick/match by sticking it through the appropriate opening when the igniter wasn't functioning properly.
That right side shelf really can't hold much with the knobs and lighter there but I do keep some utensils in that area. Being right handed, it is convenient for me.
On that side is also some places to hang cooking utensils. They must have a loop of leather or the like to hang. My tongs stay fine.
The left hand side has a stationary shelf with an additional piece that flips up and locks in place. I find that very convenient and a good reason for purchasing this unit. I am surprised at how well the finish of the shelf has stayed over the years. I do have a cover but it is off more often than on. By the time the top lid of the unit cools off, I'm inside for the night.
Some Basic Cookin'
This grill puts out 36,000BTUs of heat. That to me means that I can get four nice sized steaks on the grill at one time with a little space for potatoes in between. I can also use the warming tray for corn if I like when cooking with the top closed. When waiting for the meat to sit a bit after cooking I throw on foil wrapped corn on the cob but more recently we just throw them on unhusked. They do have a more "charcoal" flavour that way. Some of us in the family like it and some don't.
Flavour is sent back up to meats and all through a series of five triangular shaped pieces of metal that are above the burners and under the grill. Most fat and stuff rolls down that but some flashes up to send flavours back to the meat. These pieces of metal are the weak point of the grill. That's the only thing that must be replaced. I'm squeezing one more season out of them but they are going fast. I can get replacement parts for them and other parts for the grill. That I like.
My grill happens to have cast iron grates. This unit comes in a couple of different ways. The Depot had cast for me. I like it and don't. I like the sear marks they leave when i preheat the grill with the top down. I have found that they do tend to rust even when I try to "season" them as per instruction. They are lasting forever though.
One thing I have noticed is that I do NOT have even heat on the grill. the top right corner gets the hottest for some reason. While some might find this a fault, I have been able to live with it well knowing I can regulate cooking time by where I put the product to be cooked.
A bit More
I like the balance of this grill with two large wheels on on side. I lift one side and can easily move the grill for when mowing or whatever. Those wheels are still in good shape.
There is a basket grill underneath for storage. I rarely ever use it.
There is a small round temperature gauge that has given me information that I was out of fuel. The temperature can quickly jump up to 400 and 500 degrees with the burners up all the way. They can be adjusted for slow cooking. they are pretty good at regulating the temperatures. the gauge is helpful.
This has been a low maintenance grill for me and we have been very happy with this unit. though we have experimented and made some different kinds of meals on the grill we use it mostly for steaks burgers and dogs.
I see myself getting another few years out of this baby. Now, how many steaks will that be?
This is a late entry into Beastie Girl's Summer W/O
