monky213's Full Review: Whirlpool Whispure 510 Air Purifier
I spent way too many hours researching this at work. We live in an older house surrounded by beautiful flowering plants. Between the dust and the pollen, my wife oftentimes had problems with her allergies.
I won't lie, I was immediately drawn to a fancy Ionic air purifier. It was sleek and they had a special if you bought multiple units. After laying down $1000, I went home and set up our three new systems. I couldn't get to sleep that night. The set puts out a funky ozone smell, I just couldn't get past. In fact I finally woke up at 1 AM and turned them all off. It's actually my own fault, I read the reviews, did the research, and knew it was far from the best...but I was drawn to it's aesthetics. I tend to be a complete consumer and I like shiny new toys.
So the Ionic systems went back, and I picked up two of the Whispure 510s at half the cost. I initially resisted because they're bulky and loud (compared to an Ionic system). After using them for some time, I'm happy to say they really perform well. I'm very glad I moved to a true HEPA filtration set. In addition to cleaning the air, they do a great job of moving the air. They take air in from the front, and exits it out the top. The fan is buried far enough in there so little fingers stay safe. We're getting significantly better overall air flow. The unit has four settings, and we typically use it on the low or medium settings. We've found anything more to be too loud. I suppose it is quieter than others, but it's a noise I still notice. On it's maximum setting, it sounds a lot like the ventalation fan you would see over a stove or in a bathroom. There are also filter replacement indicator lights, a carrying handle, and the cord wraps up underneath it keeping everything nice and neat. Since using it, there has been less dusting and less sneezing.
Keep in mind, upkeep on this will be roughly $130 a year plus whatever it adds to your power bill. They require quarterly pre-filter replacements and annual HEPA filter replacements.
One last thing, I read a posting from someone taking the entire unit apart and removing the styrofoam inside. They thought this was a necessary step the manual failed to mention. Please do not do this. The styrofoam is designed to direct the air a certain direction, and muffle the noise.
