moremail's Full Review: Whistler DE-1743 Radar Detector
I constantly use my radar detector and I feel as if I'm missing something if I'm in a vehicle without one or if I'm in my car and I don't have mine on. I spent 3 years driving with one and I swear the day, THE VERY DAY that I bought a new car I ended up with a ticket because I hadn't put it in the window.
However, the most ANNOYING thing about this particular whistler product is when you're sitting at a light and you hear, "bleep bleep bleep, X Band, bleep bleep!" and it goes on and on and on, you actually have to either turn it off, or reach up every time and hit the mute button to shut it up!
I'll admit, I've saved myself easily 3 or 4 tickets because it was there for me, and it has made me more of an alert driver, and even though I think it's totally annoying I won't get rid of it, either because I'm stuck to thinking I 'need' it due to the fact that it's saved me from a couple tickets or because I'm so used to having something in the middle of my dash.
They advertise this with 'hundreds of warning signals' but in over a year of use, and more than 48,000 miles of driving (lots of long distance highway), I've heard only a couple things, Caution and Laser, they were VERY rare, and almost shocking to hear, (it was like, wow! it's saying something different!) normally all I hear is 'X band', 'K band', and sometimes, not so often, 'Ka Band'.
All I can say is, if you're near a bank, a Radio Shack, a mall, or department store, for SOME reason it'll go nuts!
Basically, I can't decide for everyone whether they should have one or not, just buy one, keep the receipt and the original packaging and try it out for a couple weeks.... if you're not in an insane asylum by the end of those two weeks, keep it. :-)
