| buggywhip's Full Review: Yamaha HTR-5640 6.1 Channels Receiver |
I purchased this receiver as a replacement for a Technics SA-DX930 that I purchased three years ago that decided to die the other day. This receiver lives up to the Yamaha reputation for good sound with out having to use a lot of power to achieve it. Although this receiver is only 75 watts per channel you think it's more like 150 watts.
How do they accomplish this, with a quality unit that puts out a total harmonic distortion of 0.06% and a frequency response of 20hz-20khz you don't need massive power like other receivers do to over come higher distortion and poorer frequency response. And the price at least a couple of hundred dollars less then what you would expect to pay for a unit with this kind of quality and specs.
So you got to give up something for the cheaper price right, you would think you have to sacrifice other features. Well your wrong the Yamaha HTR-5640 is a 6.1 channel receiver with Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital EX, DTS/DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS Neo:6 and DSP decoders. The DSP allows you to choose almost any listening situation you like from concert hall to music video, jazz club to disco, sports to sci-fi and many more. You can program the unit for the size of the room your using it in, so you can customize the sound for your physical environment. Combine that with plenty of optical and coaxial inputs make this a complete home audio receiver with the flexibility to accommodate all your Audio/Video needs.
The unit itself is easy to program and a cinch to operate. The remote control is definitely user friendly, and is capable of being programed to operate almost any other component you have from DVD player to VCR if you still have one. As far as durability goes I will update as time goes by but Yamaha has a 2 year parts and labor warranty one of the best the industry offers so that's a good sign.
I looked at and listened to a lot of A/V receivers Sony, Kenwood, Panasonic, Onkyo, Harmon Kardon and even expensive ones like Denon. Yet this Yamaha receiver sounded as good or any many cases better then all those hands down. It produced practically distortion-free sound with a depth and realism that sends chills up your spine. And for the money you can hardly go wrong.
