Keyboard feel (Reply to this comment)
by pngwnlvr
This was a very helpful review. One thing I would point out, though, is that the review can be read to suggest that selecting between "hard" and "soft" changes the actual FEEL of the keys -- for example, how hard they push back when you push on them. But that's not the case -- the keys don't feel, physically, any different when you select "hard" or "soft" -- rather, the electronics are set to be more or less sensitive to the differences in speed with which the keys are depressed, to make the resulting volume differences more or less pronounced when the keys are hit with a given amount of force.

88 keys is a must for me. I lose my bearings otherwise. This keyboard weighs only about 35 lbs. I can lift it easily, although the shape and size is a little awkward. Much better now that I have the case.

The p80 will feed midi data to your computer, Deb, but you will need some software on that end to make sheet music out of it. Also, the midi data you get out of this is pretty basic. I bet they'd be glad to demo its capabilities for you at a store. I haven't used the MIDI on mine at all.

what the dif is between the Yamaha p80 & Roland XP-80, which I think has everything. I wanted the full 88 keys, but it was too long & heavy for me to lift easily. I got the Roland XP80 76 keys, but I run out sometimes on oompah bass or treble arpeggios.

Hi there!
I really enjoyed this review. I have an old Yamaha PF15. It's basically a dinosaur. I bought it in 1984, so needless to say, there's no MIDI.

I've been looking for a nice keyboard to replace it, for gigs. Mine weighs about 90 pounds, and I can't move it myself. I'd also like to fool around with MIDI. Nothing major ... I just want to hook it to the computer so I can print out sheet music for my compositions. Would this one do that?

Nice job!

Let me know how you get on when you get it.

One little thing: when you play with headphones you really notice the key noise!!

I'm really tempted to take it to church and funkify some otherwise boring psalms, but I know I'd be run outa there on a rail!

I'm happy to read your comments. I have this keyboard on order right now, and I was checking to see if anyone else had it and whether they liked it.

I played this keyboard in the store, and I was impressed with the feel of the keys. I hate that weird snappy feel of some other keyboards' keys. These keys feel as close to real piano keys as any keyboard I've come across. This is the first keyboard I have ever bought -- I never could get comfortable with the feel of them in the past.

And I don't really care much for a lot of MIDI bells and whistles, so this keyboard is perfect for me. I like the different piano voices and that you can adjust for four different acoustics settings: Hall or Room, etc.

I'm glad to hear that you're as happy with this as I expect to be. Thanks for writing that review!

A fine keyboard review! Unfortunately, I did want some of the "bells and whistles" in addition to a great piano, so I opted for my Alesis QS8.1. While keys feel great, I agree: these machines have yet to fully emulate an acoustic piano. You'd probably gag playing your Beethoven sonata on mine! :)

Once again, very well done. Best of luck!
