rowdystorm's Full Review: Zeiss Victory B T* 522031 Binocular
These are the third pair of binoculars I've owned. I've carried afield a pair of 10X42 Leicas for some time and although they are superb, they can get a bit cumbersome after a while. I decided to shop for a pair of inexpensive water proof compacts in the 8 or 10 power range. I've found through the years though that when it comes to sporting optics, you usually get what you pay for, and after looking through a bunch of low to mid priced models, I decided to go with what I knew I'd be most satisfied with, German optics. I settled on the Zeiss because I've used their older compact model before and found them to be comfortable with great clarity. I also had heard good things about Zeiss USA customer support. I made the purchase on-line from an authorized Zeiss Dealer. When they arrived, I was surprised to find that they were made in Hungary, not Germany, and the pair I received caused me a bit of eye strain after two or three minutes of steady use. Thinking that maybe I didn't have them adjusted quite right, I decided to use them for one season. At the end of four months use, there was no doubt that this pair had issues. I contacted Zeiss USA Customer Support, and shipped them the binos for warranty service. I suspected the collimation or lense coatings were off somehow. Zeiss USA sent the binos to Germany for repair. Six weeks later, I found out that Germany had determined to replace them at no cost to me. In a few days I received a brand new pair of 8X20 BT* which were a newer and improved version of what I had sent in for repair. Thus far, this pair has been fantastic! Not the least bit of eye strain, and of course the clarity, brightness, and color one would expect from Zeiss optics. I am extremely pleased with the service I received from Zeiss. As far as the fact that these binos are made in Hungary...well I guess the manufacturing costs are probably lower than German made versions, which keeps the purchase price lower; but I'm not as confident in the Hungarian quality assurance as I am in the German made units. I would advise anyone purchasing a similar pair, to try out the pair you wish to buy or you might end up needing to swap them out.
