| pencilneck's Full Review: iRiver iFP-380T (128 MB) MP3 Player |
I've been using the iFP-380T for about 2 weeks now, got it mainly so I could listen to music while mowing the yard.
The unit is really small, fits in your hand without any problem, shapped very well. In one way it is more for a lefty because the display is then right side up, but in another way it is for a righty because then your fingers that wrap around the unit can press the 3 buttons on top of the unit. In the end, it doesn't really matter because 95% of control will be with the joystick that your thumb rest on (vol up/down, track forward/back).
Sound is really good, but not as loud as I'd like. The headphones it comes with are good (earbuds) but I wish the cord was a bit longer because I'm tall and when I put the unit in my pocket it can end up pulling on the left ear. My wife doesn't have this problem since she is shorter.
The battery last a long time. 10-ish hours so far and 3 out of 4 bars still showing. The battery door issue that people complained about on the older models has been fixed. Fits very well and doesn't pop open at random.
The software that comes with is loaded up on my sW!Ndle 2000 copies (desk and laptop) without any problems. The software is really basic stuff. Drop/drag kind of thing, create folders, delete stuff. The total lack of features is good because it makes it really super easy to use, and be honest, you already have a good CD ripper, do you need yet another?
Cutting open the package and listening to tunes will take you maybe 10-ish minutes. There are soo many details/option you can set that it can take a while to learn them. But basic use will take you just a few minutes. Some of the options I do like is you can set how long the back light is on. People were whining about it only being 3 seconds, well now you can have it on for minutes at a time, I set mine for 11 seconds. You can also set a 5 band EQ, voice record options, display options, fade in, how the random will work, ect ect ect ect ect (I still haven't learned all of the options).
The FM tuner is good, but not great. Since the cord is the ant, as you move around you'll sometimes pick up static noise. I look at it this way, how many units in this pricerange even have a FM tuner that you can record?
The voice recorder seems to work OK, I just used it once when I first got it. For the kids in 10th grade, I don't know how well it records a fart, but I'd say it would do pretty good.
I paided $10 more for this unit that the Creative Labs Nomad Muvo, and that $10 gave me a FM tuner, voice recorder, LCD display, and much better control to move around playlist. I have no problems telling friends/family that the IFP-380T is a good MP3 player.
