I've been interested in seeing Puss in Boots since I first heard a movie was being made about the character several years ago. I finally saw the movie and really enjoyed it overall.
Puss in Boots has been living on the run for a while. He stops in a bar and finds out about a chance to steal magic beans from Jack and Jill. Puss decides to go after the beans only to encounter another feline with the same idea. Things don't go well and Puss discovers that the other cat is a female named Kitty Softpaws. She is working with Humpty Alexander Dumpty, someone from Puss's past. The two of them want Puss to work with them to get the magic beans which will give them the chance to get the goose the laid the golden egg. Puss decides to work with Kitty and Humpty even though he doesn't trust him.
Puss is a character that was first introduced in Shrek 2. I really liked the character in that movie, so I was interested in seeing a movie focused on him. I think I read that Puss in Boots is supposed to be set before Puss meets Shrek. There is nothing mentioned in this movie that ties to anything with Puss from the Shrek movies and none of the other characters turn up. I think it works having this one as a separate movie with all different characters.
There is an attempt to add some complications to what is going on in Puss in Boots with the issues between Puss and Humpty. After meeting Kitty and seeing Humpty again, Puss tells Kitty what happened. Even with that, things are rather simple and straight forward. I did figure out one thing well before it happened. That didn't keep me from enjoying the movie, though some people may feel differently. Children may be more surprised by a few things that happen.
Puss in Boots has a decent amount of humor, though it wasn't as funny as I had thought it would be. I still laughed at things and think the movie is cute overall. It just could have been a little funnier. Puss does a lot of things that I thought were really cute. Part of that might be because I have cats. Some of the humor is slightly more grown up, though kids probably won't catch those things. Parents might want to check out the movie before letting their kids see it.
The computer animation used for Puss in Boots is very well done. The fur on Puss is really good, with the individual hairs being visible and really standing out. The strands did move a bit, but it still wasn't as impressive as what Pixar did in Monsters, Inc. The movie is showing in 3D in some theaters. I ended up seeing the 3D version. The 3D was all right, but DreamWorks has done more impressive things in some of their other animated 3D movies.
Puss has a troubled past, which leads to his life of crime. He seems to want to do the right thing, but that isn't always easy for him to accomplish. The character is really cute and I really like him. Antonio Banderas returns to do the voice of the character again. Kitty Softpaws is known for being a good thief, which she demonstrates several times. She isn't that developed, but she seems nice enough. Selma Hayek does well with the voice of the character.
Humpty Dumpty says he wants to make things better with Puss. Humpty has a plan and he sets out to get Puss involved. Humpty can be manipulative and his motives may not be clear. Zack Galifianakis does a good voice for the character. Jack and Jill start out with the magic beans. They are made out to be evil and they are clearly bad characters. They could be a bit scary to younger children. Billy Bob Thorton and Amy Sedaris do fine with the voices. The other characters that are in the movie are just in a few scenes and don't do as much.
Main Voice Cast

Zack Galifianakis - Humpty Dumpty
Selma Hayek - Kitty Softpaws
Amy Sedaris - Jill
Billy Bob Thorton - Jack

Puss in Boots is a cute, entertaining animated movie that is worth seeing even though it isn't as funny as I had thought it would be. People that like the character of Puss should give the movie a chance.
