Pyrex Easy Grab Bakeware, 8 square inch - 1085797

Several weeks ago, a calamity happened in my kitchen. I was putting away one of my trusty favourites, a Pyrex eight inch square glass baking pan, and the beastly thing slipped out of my hands, hit the counter and shattered my favourite teapot, and continued to the floor where it broke into pieces. Fortunately, I suppose that I was lucky in that none of the shards hit my tender flesh, but it was very apparent that the glass pan would have to be replaced, and soon.

Pyrex pans have been around ever since I was a child, thick glass pans that worked perfectly for baking, whether it was a dessert or a chicken dish. They've cleaned up perfectly, and were fairly light on the pocket book. What I really enjoyed about them is that I could bake a cake in them, serve it, and not have to worry about the pan being damaged by a knife -- something that made it impossible to keep a nonstick pan for more than a year as some of my housemates never learnt to turn the baked goods out of the pan before cutting into it.

Ahem.

With the redesign of the classic 8" pan, now there's higher sides, and the best innovation, handles that are larger, with a cutout that makes it easier to hold onto when removing it from the oven. The capacity of the pan is two quarts (1.9 litres), which is another improvement.

Now for the downside. There are conditions that will destroy these pans, and not just dropping one either. Always preheat the oven. Always set the hot glassware on dry pot holders or a kitchen towel. And it's always a good idea to add a bit of water to the pan to make certain that the bottom is covered. Finally, don't use this one the stovetop or broiler. However this can be used in the microwave and dishwasher safe. The instructions are simple, and in addition to English they are also written in French and Spanish.

What I also recommend is that you buy one of these directly from the manufacturers at pyrexware.com as you will get the best possible price. I paid only 8.99$US, plus shipping, as compared to what Amazon or other online retailers were asking -- up to 35$US, which is outrageous.

Five stars overall for me, and a very happy recommendation from me. Oh, and I intend to keep it stored in one of the lower cabinets from now on.
