Johnny Depp in an Animated Western - Rango

Pros:Entertaining movie.  Depp's voice work.

Cons:Story could have been more original.  Snake character.

The Bottom Line: Rango has a few issues, but it is an entertaining movie worth seeing.

Even before I really knew what Rango was about, I wanted to see it.  I had the chance to see it today and I decided to go.

After getting stranded in the desert, Rango ends up in Dirt, a small, rather lawless old west like town.  Taking advantage of the fact that no one knows anything about him, Rango spins stories that make him out to be a hero.  He somehow manages to deal with a situation and is made the new sheriff by Mayor.  It doesn't take long for Rango to realize that Dirt has a major water problem.  While trying to deal with that, he ends up in even more danger.

Rango isn't technically based on any other movies or books.  Despite that, it is very clear that it has been influenced by several westerns.  I'm not a big fan of some of those westerns, but I could see the similarities.  Adults may appreciate those things while won't pick up on them.  The story isn't that original overall and most of what happens ends up being predictable in some way.  I wasn't bothered by that because the movie was fun and entertaining overall.  The movie probably won't seem as predictable to children.

Even though it is an animated movie, Rango really isn't aimed at young children.  There is violence in a few scenes, including characters dying, though things aren't that graphic or gruesome.  Some of what happens will probably scare younger children.  One character is a giant rattlesnake that even freaked me out a bit.  Though to be fair, I do have issues with snakes, even when I know they aren't real.  The movie is rated PG, something that parents should keep in mind.  Mild profanity does turn up in a couple of scenes.  It isn't extreme, but that might bother some parents.  This movie is more for older children and adults.

There is humor in several scenes of Rango, but that doesn't make the movie really funny overall.  It isn't really serious either, though it may be too serious for some children more in the mood for a silly movie.  There are funny moments throughout the movie.  Gross humor does turn up every so often.  This movie is different in a way that is harder to describe.  Some of the scenes are a bit surreal, which could confuse some children.  I think the surreal stuff works for the movie overall.  A band of owls turning up every so often, narrating what is going on through song, something else that makes the movie a little different.  The things that make it different help to make it so entertaining.

Rango is a computer animated movie.  The characters don't look that cute, but the way they look does fit for the setting.  The desert looks believable and makes a decent setting.  The animation does have a kind of different look to it.  This is actually the first animated movie that ILM has done.  The company, normally involved in special effects, did the computer animation.  I do think the animation is done well.  The first few minutes of the credits have some animated images.

Just about all of the characters in Rango are animals of some kind.  Rango is a chameleon having a bit of an identity crisis.  He's use to blending in, so he decides to stand out when he gets the chance.  He's not a typical hero character and he does have flaws.  The flaws help to make him interesting.  Johnny Depp does really well with the voice of the character.  None of the other characters receive as much attention as Rango.  Beans is a female lizard of some type who is trying to figure out what is going on with the water.  Isla Fisher's voice is fine for the character.

Ned Beatty does the voice of Mayor, the mayor of the town.  He's only ever called mayor.  Rattlesnake Jake is a gunfighting snake who terrorizes Dirt unless a hawk is around.  He makes a good bad guy character and Bill Nighy does a good voice for the character.  Priscilla is a young girl in town who keeps popping up, questioning Rango.  Abigail Breslin does fine with the voice.  Timothy Olyphant does the voice for the only human character, the Spirit of the West.  Well, he's sort of a human character who looks a lot like Clint Eastwood's character from the Sergio Leone movies he made.

Main Voice Cast

Ned Beatty - Voice of Mayor
Abigail Breslin - Priscilla
Johnny Depp - Voice of Rango
Isla Fisher - Voice of Beans
Bill Nighy - Rattlesnake Jake
Timothy Olyphant - Spirit of the West

Gore Verbinski - Director

Rango could have had a stronger plot, but the movie is still fun and entertaining overall.  I do think it is worth seeing.
