| alhena's Full Review: 99 Restaurant & Pub |
My husband and I stopped at the 99 restaurant and pub in Vernon CT a few nights ago.
We had been to the 99 before but not in at least a year. The last time we went we were really dissappointed in everything. The service had been terrible and the food was really awful. We actually complained at that point and the company mailed us a gift certificate which I'd been carrying around in my wallet since then and was going to expire next week. Since we are cheapskates, we decided to stop in for a bite since it was on the way home.
The restaurant is divided into a main dining room and a bar area. The bar area is usually pretty smoky so we went for a booth in the dining room. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed. They have stuff hanging on the walls like at TGI Fridays or Ruby Tuesdays.
When the waitress came over to take our drink order she brought us a bowl of popcorn. I've always liked restaurants that do that.
The menu is really nothing special. They have a few appetizers, some soups, salads, burgers.. a few entrees like steak and fish & chips. I don't remember seeing a lot of vegetarian friendly meals but admittedly I wasn't looking.
We both ordered a root beer and we also ordered the chicken quesadilla and boneless chicken wing appetizers. For a main course we both ordered the soup & salad combo.
The waitress brought over our drinks and offered us more popcorn. (bonus points for her!) Maybe 10 minutes later brought over our appetizers.
The quesadilla was a huge flour tortilla filled with cheese, roasted red peppers and chicken. It was served with sour cream and salsa, on a bed of lettuce with a big pickled jalapeno. It was actually very very bland.
The boneless chicken wings were a large plate of fried chicken pieces smothered in their "special sauce" The sauce was relatively spicy.. if you ate one or two you wouldn't feel the burn but after a half dozen of them it was starting to get a little toasty! The wings were served with a small dish of bleu cheese dressing and a few carrots and celery sticks. I liked the wings.
The waitress promptly brought over our soups and salads. I had the french onion soup and my husband had the chicken and rice. He said that was good, I didn't taste it. The french onion was.. mediocre. I've had better, I've had worse. There were lots of onions, the broth was pretty good, not too salty, the cheese was kind of rubbery though, and the crouton was nasty. I also found a full bay-leaf in my bowl. Not that I have any objection to bay leaves but it's not what I suddenly want to find in my soup.
The salads were fine.. They had a mix of greens, a few cucumbers and tomatoes and onions. How do you screw up salad, though?
Our waitress was pretty good.. it was quite busy and there were only a couple of people working since it was so late at night (10:30 PM when we showed up). She was friendly and didn't mess up our orders.
My one pet peeve is that from where I was sitting I could smell the smoke from the smoking section. We weren't that close to it but that always bothers me.
The total on the bill was 30$. (20 after our gift certificate!) I think that the value for the food was decent. The quality of the food was decent and the service was decent. At the same time there's nothing extraordinary about this restaurant. It's one of a million places that are exactly the same. I would recommend the 99 if it's convenient and you like this sort of place.. I wouldn't drive out of my way to get there though.
