| Mebreezey's Full Review: BD's Mongolian Barbeque |
My husband and I had a night out without kids, so we thought we would try the new BD's Mongolian Barbeque located in Irvine, California. When we arrived I walked in to the small, noisy, and crowded waiting area and put our name in we were told we would have a 15 to 30 minute wait(not to bad for a Saturday night at 6:30pm) and about 30 minutes later our adventure began.
The atmosphere is trendy, but nice, it has a bar feel with a Mongolian twist. I thought it felt somewhat small and wouldn't really be good for an intimate date or even a large gathering, although they do take reservations for parties over six.
As we were being seated we couldn't help but look at the other guests creations and wondered where to start. I think our server noticed our look of bewilderment and quickly gave us the instructions on where to start, we were informed there are three buffet areas full of fresh meats and seafood, vegetables and every seasoning and sauce imaginable, as well as a soup and salad bar. All of these items included for $13.00, and all you can eat.
MEAT & SEAFOOD BAR
There was a great selection of meat and seafood that included garlic marinaded pork, steak and chicken, all three seemed very fresh and tender to the taste. They also had lamb, clamari, shrimp, scallops and cod.
VEGETABLE & NOODLE BAR
This bar was a little disappointing for me, it needed a little more in the vegetable department, it did include brocoli, baby corn ears, mushrooms, onions, leeks and sprouts, and tofu. I would have liked to have seen some zuchini, china peas, carrots, eggplant, it just needed more in my opinion. They also had noodles and a raw egg to toos it all together.
SAUCE & SPICE
Well here there was no lack in choices, quite the opposite, I wanted to try them all. In spices they had form the basics salt, pepper and garlic, to mixed herbs, cajun seasonings, lemon pepper, and many more. Their sauces included different kinds of oils, teryaki, bbq, garlic, soy, everything imaginable.
SOUP & SALAD BAR
This portion was also disappointing. The soups did not look very appetising, Chicken Tortilla, and Cream of Brocoli. The salad bar again did not have very many choices and the staff had a hard time keeping it stocked. But I was not here for soup or salad and wanted to get to the main event.
So now we new what to do we headed to the buffets, in front of the meat buffet they have a little recipe card holder with suggestions and combinations. We chose to do our own experiment. You load all the items you like, then a few spoons of seasonings and oil and off to the entertaining cooks who prepare your food on a large circular grill, they all move in a circular motion ascraper to clean, a tosser to prepare and a server, and in about 3-5 minutes you have a fresh feast. Our creations turned out great and after 3 trips each one getting smaller we were stuffed and were thinking what new combinations we could try the next time. My husband and I thought we would try many more smaller potions next time, so we didn't get full so quickly.
Even though I found a couple things disappointing, I felt the great unique things they offer far outweighed any negatives. The food tasted great, and I guess you give them the credit for helping you make the meal you want with no mess to clean up. I think you definitely can get your $$$$$ worth here.
