| biscuitfarmer's Full Review: BD's Mongolian Barbeque |
I have been a huge fan of Mongolian BBQ ever since I first stepped foot into a Chang's Mongolian BBQ in Everett Washington, with my Homecoming date my Sophomore year of high school. Ever since then, I have been seeking them out and dining in them. Probably the best I have found, would have to be the BD's Mongolian BBQ chain.
The chain was actually started close to where my wife was born, so we found ourselves going there every night after hitting our favorite comedy club in Royal Oak. To date, we have probably eaten here nearly 30 times, because we would go to this club, virtually every weekend, and it just became part of our tradition.
Style of Dining
The style of dining is pretty much come as you are, but don't be stupid about it. Make sure that you have sleeves on your shirts and things like that. Don't look like a slob walking in, because, even though, they are extremely relaxed, you won't see anyone else that is dressed down all that much.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere is extremely relaxed and modern. Everything about the restaurants screams out modern. From the shirts, that say, "We do it on a grill" to the young people that work there. Even the tables, chairs, decorations, background music, colors, everything, all modern styles. They are definitely geared towards a younger, more hip audience looking for good food at a reasonable price.
Menu
HA! There really isn't a menu, that's the great thing about BD's. There are some things on the menu, such as steaks and burgers that you can order, but other than that, you're pretty much on your own. And when I say, on your own, I mean you get to go and pick out everything that you want on your plate.
The idea is, you get to go and select your meat, lamb, chicken, salmon, turkey, beef, calamari, whatever, they have all sorts of stuff, pretty much any meat that you could think of. Then you get to pick out your vegetables, and don't be stingy, because they give the food it's flavor. They have everything here from carrots, to cauliflour, to pea pods, sprouts, whatever you could possibly want for the perfect mongolian dish.
Then the final step is to choose different sauces or spices that you want to add. They have a map on the wall that details different spice or sauce combinations you can use in order to create a specific flavor, but it's the most fun when you do it on your own. They have somewhere in the neighborhood of like 30-40 different spices and another 20 different sauces. There are so many to choose from that you would have to go hundreds of times to try all of the different flavor combinations. So every time you go can be a completely different experience.
You then take your plate up to this giant grill, where there are loads of people cooking at the same time. They take your food throw it on the grill, make sure you watch where they put it, and they cook it up. They make sure that the food is cooked all the way through, before giving it back to you. These guys are crazy up there, they toss the food around, catch in bowls, will throw shrimp up and catch it in their mouth. They even flip knives, and other items around, making sure that they are the only ones in the danger area.
Experience
By the grill, the grillers are always singing and dancing to all sorts of music. You'll see them flipping food around their heads and catching in their mouths or flipping it over to someone else to catch.
If you bang their gong, things get crazy! You see them run around switch cutters, and pour alcohol on the grill, create a smoke cloud. Very cool thing to watch.
The Food
If you don't like the food, well, I guess you can't blame it on anyone except for yourself, because you made it. So if you don't trust yourself, look at the different options that are laid out and pick one that you want to try. That's the best way to know where to go from there. You figure out what you like and experiment from there.
The best part is, after you are done with your first bowl, you get to go back up for more and get to try making a completely different creation. I always go with lamb first and then go for more of a seafood style setup the next time. Just make sure that you remember what you used, because if you come up with something truly delicious, I want to hear about it, and I'm sure you'll want to recreate it.
Overall
This is a really cool restaurant for people of all ages and walks of life. The atmosphere is very relaxed and entertaining. The food is made completely by you, so if you have a bad experience it's probably your own fault.
The people here are extremely helpful and nice to talk to, but who wouldn't be nice if they worked in such a fun environment.
The pricing is extremely reasonable and the food is limitless, you can take and make whatever you want and as often as you want, so go out and experiment a little.
