| groves22's Full Review: BD's Mongolian Barbeque |
If you knew me, you would know I love to eat. Now that I think about it, that seems like an understatement. My wife often wonders how I eat so much, in such a short period of time. I enjoy eating different styles of food as well. Dont get me wrong, I love the more traditional restaurants; Applebees, Outback, TGI Fridays and so on, but I love to dabble in the unique. I would classify BDs Mongolian Barbeque (more commonly called BDs, for short) as unique. My first BDs experience was in late 2006, near Dayton, Ohio, and I couldnt wait to go again!
Currently, I live in the greater Columbus, Ohio area. There is a BDs about 15-20 minutes north of my home. This particular BDs is found on a corner, in the Easton Town Center. There is a huge parking lot across the street, but it also shares the spaces with Macys and other smaller stores/restaurants. Parking, however, is hardly an issue, if you dont mind a few extra feet to walk.
When I first heard Mongolian barbeque, I really didnt have a clue what to think. I didnt quite understand what Mongolian food was. Well I was pleasantly surprised. I will talk about my latest trip now.
We showed up around 5:00PM, prime time dinner hours. We put our name in with the hostess and look for a seat. It was standing room only in the waiting area, and around the bar. Luckily, I had my pregnant wife with me, as someone offered us their seats to wait. As we were sitting, we noticed a sign for call ahead seating. I would recommend looking in to that, if you plan on eating at BDs. We finally got seated around 6:15PM at a table that had booth seating on one side and 2 chairs on the other.
We sat and within 3 to 4 minutes our waitress came to our table. They first ask, Is this your first trip to BDs? We all say no, and she proceeded to take out drink order. She then asks if we are doing one bowl, or unlimited. One bowl, I believe, was around $13, while unlimited was only $2 more. She next took our drink orders and then asked if we wanted white/fried rice, and away we went.
Included with every meal, is a soup and salad bar. To be honest, I have never utilized it. It is about the size of a hotdog vendor you would see on the street of NYC. It has your simple salad bar items and 2 hot soups. I really cant describe it any better, just because of the lack of use. For the main dish, you pick up an empty, decent sized bowl. Your first stand has all of your meats and noodles. You meats, all raw, consist of steaks, seafood, pork and chicken. You can put in as much, or as little as your want, it is set up in a buffet style. You then go to your next stand, which is made up of your vegetables. It has all of the standard veggies you could think of. The last stand has your sauces/spices. Here you will find over 20 types of sauces and 10 or so dry spices. You can mix whatever you want, into little dishes. They also have a bucket of eggs. Im no chef so I dont know what the eggs add, but my brother told me always to get one, so I do! Also, for those unadventurous, BDs has chef cards that you can follow that tell you how to make certain dishes, no thinking involved!
After you have stacked your bowl, you wait for an open spot at the grill. There is usually someone there directing traffic during busy hours. The grill is about a 9-10 foot circle, with a 2-3 foot hole cut out of the middle for waste. Im not exactly how out the grill is, but I could feel a little heat from where I was standing. There are about 5-6 cooks around the grill and they continuously rotate while the food is cooking. They are moving the food around with 3 foot long metal sticks. They are also showman, and crowd pleasing, trying to earn some tips. If you have any allergies to the food, tell the cooks and your food will be cooked in back. When your food is done (takes about 3 minutes) they scoop it up in your bowl, and take your seat.
When you get back to your seat, you will find you drinks, rice, and soft and warm tortilla shells. You can eat your dinner with your silverware, chop sticks, or scoop it up in a tortilla. When you finish, and if you have room, you go back up for more. The waitress stops back several times and asks if more rice, drinks or tortillas are needed. They also have a handful of deserts. Unfortunately, I have not had the room to even attempt them.
BDs Mongolian Barbeque has a wonderful atmosphere. It is a fun place to eat with a croup of people. I really dont see this as a good date restaurant, but more of a family/group of friends restaurant. More often than not, you will leave BDs feeling full. While in my case, really full! Seating is comfortable, décor is great, and the food is delicious. Overall, BDs has been wonderful dining experiences.
