| HITZfann's Full Review: BD's Mongolian Barbeque |
For the longest time I've heard my friends raving about this place called BD's Mongolian Barbeque. I had no idea what it was about, and didn't know why they thought this place was so cool. So, last week after we caught a movie in Bethesda, we decided to walk over to this restaurant, because I had to see what all the excitement was all about.
The restaurant was packed. We put our name on the list and stood around for about 45 minutes, during that time we ordered drinks from the bar that was in the waiting area (strictly sodas for us - come on, we're only 17!), and played some of the board games they had laying around. I looked around at the dining area as well. They have a very different decor, it's very hard to explain, I guess you could just call it "mongolian". The place looks very trendy, clean, and welcoming.
After they called our name, the hostess showed us to our seats. Soon our waiter walked up and asked if we had been there before. I said no, but all my other friends had, and they assured him that they'd show me how everything worked. We all ordered the buffet (the only thing they serve!) and were on our way.
We picked up a bowl, and headed to a long buffet bar. Included in this bar was everything you need to make a proper stir-fry. There is raw meat: chicken, turkey, red meat, and seafood. Vegetables: carrots, sprouts, onions, and about 20 other kinds. And then many different sauces and spices. You walk through the buffet and put what you'd like to be cooked in your bowl. After that you get in line to get your meal stir-fried.
Behind another circular bar there is a large grill and about five "cookers" standing around it. Once you get to the front of the line they take your bowl, throw your food on the grill, and start chopping and tossing and cooking it to pieces. The "cookers" walk around in a circle, taking turns with your food, and after about three minutes, your stir-fry is ready. I also have to add that these "cookers" are very energetic and quite humorous. They sing, dance, and make jokes the whole time while cooking over this hot stove. I don't know how they do it!
When we walked back to our table there was a big bowl of rice and a plate full of tortillas waiting for us. The stir-fry tastes great with these. I really enjoyed the stir-fry I made for myself, but I added a little too much spices. It was hot! The buffet price also includes the soup and salad bar, but it doesn't include drinks. A cool thing that I found is they have little recipe cards with good ideas for different stir-fry. I should try one of them next time I go.
Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, and the dinner is priced fairly at $12.99. If you go earlier in the day for lunch, the price is a lot cheaper, and the offer more choice (such as only stir-fry, only salad bar, etc.). This is a great restaurant to go with friends, or family. I didn't see a lot of young children, and that's probably because it might be a little difficult for them to understand the concept, and it might be hard for the parents to be carrying around two or more bowls of hot stir-fry.
I'm glad my friends introduced me to this fun place, I'm sure this is where I'll eat next time I'm in Bethesda. But, I'm going to arrive a little earlier to avoid the dinner rush.
