I have admitted many times over my addiction to fast food. I find it very hard to live without stuffing a burrito from Taco Bell down my throat, or a sack of burgers from White Castle, or a number two, supersized with a Coke from McDonald's. I always like to put some variety in my fast food eating. I come from the school of if you eat something time after time and time again, you are bound to get tired of it, regardless of how much you currently love it.
Therefore, when I am looking to take a break from burgers or burritos, my fast food of choice then switches over to Blimpie, the home of the tastiest sub around. There is something mysteriously addictive about the food at Blimpie. I can't quite put my finger on it, but every time I see a Blimpie, somehow I find myself gravitating over to the green sub counter.
I used to be a big fan of Blimpie's competition Subway, but I always found their bread to be soggy and too doughy to support all the veggies and cold cuts and dressings that Subway put on. I find that the bread that Blimpie uses is not only more practical for these kind of sandwiches, but is also more tasty and holds up better throughout the entire eating experience.
The other thing I really like about Blimpie is that the cut the cold cuts in front of me, rather than just grabbing a handful of meat from a pre-existing pile. The freshness factor comes into play here, as I always find freshly cut meats to taste better then ones that have been pre-cut.
I know that the cold cuts Blimpie uses are not exactly 'Boar's Head' meats, but for this kind of sandwich, they are more then adequate, and are actually very tasty. I have two favorites that I usually switch off ordering whenever I feel the mysterious pull of Blimpie. My two favorites are the "Blimpie Best" and the "Cheese Trio".
I have always been a big fan of cheese. Mmmmm cheese. Everything tastes better with cheese. The "Cheese Trio" is exactly what a hopeless Jedi who is addicted to cheese looks for. The sandwich is made up of 3 varieties of freshly cut cheeses. I believe the three types are American, Provolone and Swiss. I usually compliment the cheese with a generous helping of tomatoes, lettuce, hot peppers, mayonaise, oil and vinegar, salt and pepper. All of this together, makes for one heck of a tasty sandwich. The other good part of the "Cheese Trio" is that it is perfect for vegetarians. I have several friends who are vegetarians who hate going to Burger King or McDonald's per say with me, because there is very little without meat to order on the menu. Blimpie has the perfect solution here with the "Cheese Trio".
Meat lovers don't have to feel left out either. When I am looking for a nice helping of tasty cold cuts, I order the "Blimpie Best", which contains three types of meat. (I think it is made up of Spiced Ham, Turkey and Salami but I may be wrong.) Once again, when you throw all of the vegetables and extras on the sandwich, what you are left with, is a very yummy, filling sandwich. Often times, what I will do is order a full sub, eat a half then and there, and tuck the other half neatly away for a late night snack. Trust me, nothing is better then coming home from a concert and being greeted by a yummy Blimpie after a night's moshing.
The only real problem I have with this yummy chain restaurant is their price. I've eaten at Blimpies in Manhattan, Long Island, New Jersey and Upstate NY. For the most part, the price they charge is just a little steep. I think most 1/2 sandwiches cost in the neighborhood of five dollars, and most full subs cost around $8.50 or so. Given that Blimpie is supposed ot be fast food, the prices are certainly more expensive, then Taco Bell, per say. However, when you really look at the big picture, the sandwich really is big. If you pack the veggies on, you probably are going to be full, and nowadays, a descent lunch or dinner can run around $10 even if it is fast food.
In any event, all I am really here to say is that Blimpie is an excellent fast food alternative to the usual burger and fries. They provide me time after time, with a quick, tasty eating experience. While I do not eat there every day, I do find myself craving a sub from them once in a while, and scouting out the mysterious red and green lights of the local shop.
As a fast food addict, I find I need my fix every couple of weeks. Blimpie subs really do taste different from the other restaurants like them. So, now that I've made myself hungry writing about this, I think it is time for me to pick my little Jedi bootie up and get a 'Cheese Trio' for lunch.
Mmmmm cheese.
Thanks for reading.
