When Boston Market came to Fremont, CA, about 4 years ago, the line stretched out the door every night. Then the company hit financial hard times, reduced the menu selections and the lines disappeared. I know I quit going there. Based on a recent visit, I must report that things have improved substantially. My server told me that business has improved as a result, but you wouldn't know it from the emptiness of the place when I visited.
Food
Boston Market does more with less than any restaurant I've visited. They offer four main courses:
Rotisserie Chicken (white and/or dark meat)
Meatloaf
Ham
Rotisserie Turkey
You can combine these with a variety of side dishes:
Mashed Potatoes, corn, stuffing, new potatoes, cinnamon apples, coleslaw, mixed vegetables, macaroni & cheese, spinach, and specials (do ask, they offer a nice selection of specials).
You can order any of the meats with one, two or three side dishes + cornbread ($4.29-$6.79), or in sandwiches on white bread or honey wheat ($4.49-$4.99). All of the meats come in family meals for three, four, five or six. You can also buy any of the meats or side dishes al a carte (a whole chicken or pound of the other meats for $6.49; the sides in large for $2.59 and small for $1.19).
Caesar salad, chicken pot pie, soup, cornbread, fountain drinks (32 ozs., refillable, for $1.39), cookies, brownies, pies and cakes round out the menu.
Boston Market also caters at a reasonable price ($5.49-$6.99 per person).
Service
You place your order and go through the line cafeteria style. Most of the servers I've dealt with have acted friendly and helpful, though several seemed poorly trained and confused. No real complaints here.
Decor
Several uncomfortable seats and small tables crowd the inside of the small store. A few forlorn metal tables and chairs sit outside. Pictures of produce and grains adorn the walls, giving the place a friendly, country feel. I'd still rather carry out and eat at home.
Tips
The food tastes home-cooked and seems well worth the money. Still, a normal dinner with drink will set you back 6-8 dollars, more than the usual fast food meal and nearly as much as Hometown Buffet. The family meals cost between 15 and 29 dollars and you get a lot of good food for the money.
I love the chicken and turkey! Moist and succulent. I like the meatloaf, but they do overcook it at times. The ham looks dry, but tastes okay. Unlike me, my kids prefer the ham. All of the meats taste better fresh than reheated. The chicken, especially, dries out in a hurry.
I haven't tasted the sandwiches, but my wife considers them large, fresh, moist and tasty. More than enough for a meal.
Vegetarians can order three side orders and cornbread for 3.99. Theoretically, the cornbread comes with honey, but I rarely see any in the condiments racks.
The menu includes kid's meals (mac & cheese, drumstick, or kid's size meals) at a reasonable price ($1.99-$2.49).
If you choose to eat on-site rather than carrying out, you will find only small, flimsy, plastic utensils, inadequate to the task.
Overall, I recommend Boston Market for a quick, home-cooked meal, a cut above the normal burger and fries.
