| Dhano923's Full Review: Boston Market |
When our local Boston Market first opened, there was always a line just to get in the door. Once inside, you would have to wait at least 10 minutes before your turn was up, even with a dozen employees all waiting to help customers. All that's changed now. The restaurant is almost always empty. Why? Because you don't get what you pay for.
I must admit, they do have great chicken. It's slow-roasted on a spit, and the skin is always crispy and well seasoned. Their meatloaf is wonderful and moist, not dried out like other places. I'm not a big fan of the ham, which is always dried out on the edges. But the problem is that they are very stingy in their portions. If you order chicken, you get a piece of chicken that looks like it came from a cornish game hen. The meatloaf is the size of a playing card. If you order the ham, you get 2 paper-thin slices that are about 2" wide. You can see the plate though those slices!
The side dishes are the same way. While the selection is good, the portion they give you isn't. They have excellent mashed potatoes and gravy, but you'll get a scoop of potatoes the size of a golf ball, with a tablespoon of gravy. Same thing goes with the pasta salad. They have excellent macaroni and cheese, but somehow I always end up with the overcooked part that has the layer of rock-hard cheese. I've tried the steamed veggies once, and I got exactly once piece of cauliflower, 2 slices of carrot, and 2 slices of broccoli. Cornbread comes with every order, and you'll get a 2"x2" piece of yellow bread that tastes like it's made from sawdust.
I used to like their Meatloaf Carver sandwich. When they first opened, they would give you a freshly baked roll with 2 thick slices of meatloaf, topped with a slice of melted cheddar cheese, and lettuce and tomato. For $4.99, you used to get a sandwich and your choice of any side. Now, the sandwich is all bread. Stale bread. The meatloaf is now one measly slice, topped with cold cheese. If you don't ask for the lettuce and tomato, they won't even add it to the sandwich anymore! If I'm paying $5 for a sandwich, I want it to have everything.
I think Boston Market has become ridiculous. I know that they were going to file bankruptcy (or they already have), so obviously they aren't doing well. Their food tastes good, but they are scared to give out too much food. A "meal" isn't even enough to fill you up. And at $5-7 for a "meal", they should give enough food. If you ask the server to give you a full scoop of whatever (like potatoes) they give you this look like you've asked them to give you a whole chicken for free. At least at Kenny Roger's Roasters, they don't skimp. They give you a heaping scoop of side dishes. It's usually too much (if that's possible!).
I've stopped eating at Boston Market now. Yes, I do miss their great food, but for $6, I want a meal, not a snack. I can go to El Torito for that same $6 and have an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet.
