Yo Ho Ho: Let's Lunch At Captain D's

Written: Aug 02 '00
Pros:Food Cooked as you Order, Better Quality Fast Food Restaurant
Cons:Some Items are Not as Shown on the Menu

Captain D's Restaurant is probably one of the better fast food restaurants that are around. They have a much higher caliber quality of food rather than Long John Silver's and are a definitely better alternative than a fast food burger.

At Captain D's, you will be able to choose between mostly fried and baked foods. The foods are prepared while you wait so they have not been sitting around under a "lamp" which would cause toughness. Their menu includes fish, catfish, shrimp, and chicken. Their side dished include cole slaw, fries, hush puppies, baked potatoes, and seasoned rice. Drinks are sold but not included in the lunch platters.

Today, I was eyeing the menu and noticed that there was a very pleasing photograph of a new item called the Catfish Tenderloin Platter. This platter was illustrated by having several larger pieces of cornmeal battered fish, fries, hush puppies and cole slaw. Being that I adore catfish, I chose this option. However, I have to say that I was very disappointed between the presentation of the food on the menu and the actual end product.

The catfish was not as shown. Instead of larger pieces of fish, there were numerous slender tender type sizes of catfish that were curled up and not very thick at all. They tasted okay, considering that they were very thin, but I was really expecting something else. The fries were crispy and the cole slaw was really the best part of the meal because it was out of this world.

My boss had a fish platter today which consisted of three pieces of fried fish (unknown kind), fries, hush puppies and cole slaw. His fish looked more processed than I would have liked with each piece of fish having a triangle shape instead of a normal fish piece look. He enjoyed everything and stated as I had mentioned that the cole slaw was really the best he had ever eatten.

In the past, we have had the following other meals there at Captain D's: Fried Shrimp, Shrimp Scampi, Broiled Shrimp, and Fish and Fries. Each of these entrees were very good. I personally prefer the Fish and Fries for a fast and quick meal to pick up to go through the drivethrough window.

Since this is a fast food type restaurant, there isn't any waitresses to serve you or assist you in refills. Everything other than having your food handed to you is pretty much self serve. The restaurant is clean and pleasant. The booths and seating areas are well thought out, proportioned and not crowded.

Captain D's offers many specials through the week. On Wednesdays the senior citizens get a discount and on Thursdays, all children eat for free from the kid's menu which includes hamburgers, fish, or chicken. In addition, there are coupons in the newspapers for specials probably about once ever six weeks.

Overall, Captain D's is a rather good restaurant to eat for a more healthier alternative for lunch. It will continue to be on one of our most favorite's list for lunch for quite some time to come.

I highly recommend this restaurant to you for its quick service and tasty food.
