Re: What's up with local Checkers and NO TOMATO policy? (Reply to this comment)
by beeracuda
Don't worry, Wendy's in the Baltimore area only serves tomatoes with the burgers upon request. They say the reason is because of the damage done by all the hurricanes in Florida during the fall. Yeah, I don't buy that excuse either.

The Mushroom Swiss burger is the ONLY reason I ever go to Checkers. It's not a usual menu item in my area. They come out with them every few months for a limited time. But that Mushroom Swiss burger is the best! Not only are the mushrooms well cooked, but they're also in some kind of sauce, which is delicious! As for the fries, after the first few times trying them years ago, I said "no more". I prefer the McDonald's/BK type of fries.
Highly recommend Checkers, JUST for the Mushroom Swiss burger.

What's up with local Checkers and NO TOMATO policy? (Reply to this comment)
by luv_my_vw_tdi
The local Checkers here in Alexandria VA (South Alexandria known as both Hybla Valley and Gum Springs) on US Rt1. They are selling everything under the Checkers name but they say "Because of the price of Tomatoes they are no longer putting them on any products". But they have not lowered the price of any item. No other place in the area is doing this. McDonalds is across the street and so is a Five Guys (local Burger place). I could not find a Checker Corp. Office to inquire about this.

Re: A correction perhaps? (Reply to this comment)

Ha, ....or the White Castle for some....
There is a White Castle just two blocks from where my "princess" grand daughter lives. She loves dressing up as one. We pass the fast food restaurant constantly and she thinks of it as a castle and not an eatery so yes we do say "going to the castle" or "the white castle". Though it's not proper,(the) happens to stay in our family language.
You are correct, the name is White Castle.
Thanks for stopping by, rating and commenting. It's always good to see you.

A correction perhaps? (Reply to this comment)
by bonniesayers
First I have not been here in sometime, will have to see where there is a close one to me.
Regarding White Castle, I do not recall there being a THE in front of the name, then again I am in CA so who knows maybe they changed the name over the years.

Checkers Fries (Reply to this comment)
by lpteague
You're right on about those being habit-forming... I know some people that go nuts over these fries. Anytime we're within driving distance, we have to go to Checkers for those darned fries. Me, I could take them or leave them. As someone mentioned already, I'm a fan of crisp, crinkle-cut fries w/ the perfect amount of salt.
Nice review!

A swiss mushroom burger sounds great Phil! I agree on the dogs, once you are a parton of Nathans, nothing tastes the same!

Checkers (Reply to this comment)
by kittie74
We had a Checkers here for a while, but it didn't last. I guess people couldn't get used to those fries with the coating. I thought they were pretty good, but I didn't like them with ketchup either!

When I read your review, I was reminded of sending my poor hubby out to get Checkers fries when I was 8 months pregnant. I tried to be careful what I ate, but, boy, did I love those things when I was expecting!
:0 Great review,

You know what I don't see much of anymore? (Reply to this comment)

That's crinkle cut fries. The only places I see them are when I go to a 50's type of burger joint.
I honestly can't think of one fast food resturant, or anywhere for that matter, that serves crinkle cut fries.

Checkers... (Reply to this comment)
by kld718
My mom and I would stop at Checkers on the way to my grandmothers every weekend when I was in high school. We actually liked the fries and always ordered a milkshake to go with them.
I haven't eaten here in awhile, since even before I left Florida because I am just not into fast food anymore.
Good review.

I use to frequent Checkers when I lived in Georgia, I think the substitute in the Midwest is Rally's. It was the 99 cent burgers and the fast service that lured me in.

Before I moved to Orlando, I had visited Checkers in Richmond Virginia a few times. I hated the food. I dislike fries, as you say, with a coating. Personally, I didn't think the burgers were very good either. I tried a spicy chicken sandwich and wouldn't order that again, either.
The place I used to go to closed up in Richmond. Drdevience could say if there's any more around Richmond, but then I decided to give them a try here in Orlando. My opinion didn't change after trying them here either.

Nice review here. Checkers is just another fast food place for the most part, but you're right about the Mushroom Swiss-a good deal for a buck. A couple of these and a coke are a good lunch, for about the same price (or less) as a combo most places. And you don't get stuck with fries (I'm really sick of fries!).
Cheers!

No windows but the ones to order from? I wouldn't be able to work there either. I love fries and these do not sound appealing to me at all. I think I will stick to Burger King too. I'm sure you dog was loving it LOL.
Excellent review as always Phil.
