Having lived in Texas for the past six years, I've gotten accustomed to the typical tex-mex fare -- as my Mexican compadres say, "More Tex than Mex." I was pleasantly surprised to come across this former Denver-based chain (now a wing of the McDonalds empire) just down the street from my Austin office. I was even more impressed when I stopped in one day to try one of their signature burritos. Mmm, mmm good!
Unlike so much of the Mexican food offered up here in central Texas, the food is actually pretty healthy: heavy on the veggies, light on the cheese, and nary a hint of the deep fry vat. You can mix and match in your burrito, from chicken to beef to barbacoa to vegetarian. You'll get your choice of black or pinto beans, cheese, and veggies. Chipotles also offers three "different heat levels on the salsa -- I call 'em "east Texas" (ketchup with a hint of chili powder), "central Texas" (there's a bit of a bite after a tablespoon or two), and "west of Texas" (actually kinda warm). Beer and wine are available, as are bottomless soft drinks. Best of all, two of you can get in and out for just about $13, including (high) taxes.
So if you're watching your food intake, or your wallet, or both, give Chipotles a try some day. Be forewarned, though -- you won't find a single quesadilla, chimichanga, or chalupa in the place -- and no stupid little dog!
