My fiance and I moved to Austin, TX from central Alabama about a month ago. During my first week at work, my coworkers kept advising me to go to Chuy's. Well, last week - two months into my new job here - we went to the Chuy's on Research Blvd. and 183. I thought it was going to be your average Mexican joint. Was I ever wrong!
The atmosphere at Chuy's is not that of a typical Mexican restaurant. No mariachi bands, no pinatas (from what I could see), none of that. The feeling was somewhat of a cross between the kitschy decor of Applebee's and the southwestern-type style that is so popular out here. The wait staff was very friendly, and though there were crowds of people waiting, we got seated immediately (because we agreed to sit outside).
When our waitress arrived, she brought two types of salsa and a hefty serving of tortilla chips. Our drinks (they have Coca-Cola products, plus a wide selection of margaritas and beer) were brought to us promptly. All very good - nothing stale or flat.
Our dinners took about 15-20 minutes to arrive after we placed our order. I ordered the Southwestern Enchilada - a blue corn tortilla with chicken, cheese, green chile sauce, and a fried egg (yes, a FRIED EGG) on top. The sauce was a little hot for me, but after the initial shock, I found that my meal was delicious. For those of you who like your nose to run as you eat - order anything with the green sauce. Trust me.
My sweetie ordered the chicken fajitas, which were brought to him in a variety of containers for him to assemble himself. The condiments included not only lettuce and tomato, but also guacamole and refried beans - something you don't always get with your fajitas. The chicken was hot and sizzling, and there were just enough flour tortillas.
While perusing the menu, I noticed that Chuy's also had a wide selection of other meals, from the "Chuychanga" (fried tortilla with meat) to fish tacos. And the price is pretty good for such a quality meal - I think our total ticket was $25, and that included a beer AND the tip.
Chuy's has three locations in Austin and some in Dallas and Houston as well. For more information, you can visit their Web site at www.chuys.com.
