| anecdoter's Full Review: Frisch's |
Frisch's and Frisch's Big Boy is a chain of restaurants that are just a step above McDonald's and Co, but just about below every place else. Haven eaten there far too many times, I can honestly say that the last time will be the final time.
These restaurants are quite nice on the interiors, and I have never been in a dirty one. The motif is casual dining that tries, and most likely succeeds in, not offending anyone. The plentiful woodwork is very light and cheery plastic plants abound. This is probably everything that this chain has going for it.
Service at these restaurants is hit or miss - with can be, to a certain extent, said for most places. However, I have had poor service five out of ten times and all at different locations. This poor track record is the main reason I will not set foot in another Frisch's. On one occasion, my girlfriend and I went to a Frisch's in Maumee, OH and were virtually ignored by the staff. After giving us our drinks, the waitress did not come back to our table; she did not take our menus and did not ask if we wanted anything else. After twenty minutes, we were very hungry and decided to leave. When we complained to the manager he said nothing and did not even offer to pay for our drinks, which were inexpensive sodas. On a second time, at another location in Toledo, OH, we went in to a Frisch's and stood at the wait to be seated sign for ten minutes. After we were finally seated, another ten minutes had passed before a waitress appeared and she took the order of a couple who had came in after us first; we considered this to be very rude and we left the restaurant without ordering anything.
To be fair, there are several locations around Toledo, that do have good service. Most notably are the Frisch's in Perrysburg and Bowling Green, OH.
Dirty dishes is also a problem at these restaurants. One time, I was taking a sip of my Sprite when I noticed a rather large piece of dressing covered lettuce floating among my ice cubes. On another occasion, my silverware was covered in a thick grime that quickly forced my appetite to flee. Yet another time, I found hair in my salad, which is an instant turn off, even though it is fairly common place in restaurants.
The food at Frisch's is mediocre, but it is generally better than most chain burger places. However, I feel Bob Evan's provide a better variety of better food for similar prices. Frisch's is worth the relatively low prices and does give good portions. Their hamburgers and sandwiches are always thick and the vegetables are always crisp and fresh. However, their coleslaw is a little too runny for my taste and sometimes, according to my girlfriend, their "Big Boy" sauce does not taste right. There is one exception to this, the beef and noodle dinner, which includes the salad bar (which I pass on by principle) is a dish far better than Hamburger Helper Strouganauf (I know the spelling is wrong, sorry) and the price is just right.
The menu at Frisch's is fairly limited and is more akin to that of a fast food restaurant than a sit down place. There are few healthy selections on the menu, but this is compensated from the average sized salad bar - which I have never had and therefore cannot comment about. Their garden salad though is pretty generous and has always been, for me anyways, fresh. The desert menu is pretty slim; if you usually get a desert with your burger, I suggest Friendly's instead.
While I have had some bad experiences at this restaurant, and am determined to never set foot in one again, people who find a Frisch's with good service will probably, if their expectations are not too high, get what they expected. I strongly suggest going to a Friendly's, Denny's, or Bob Evans before going to a Frisch's though - they are all simmilar, but Frisch's, in my opinion, ranks last in taste and hygiene.
