| jenninca's Full Review: Graeter's |
I have weird tastes in ice cream. When I was about 10 years old, my family went to New York City on vacation, and we went to an ice cream store. Always having liked coconut, when I saw coconut ice cream on the menu, I got it. It was delicious. I think I even wrote about it in my diary.
Fast forward about 12 years--poor jenninca's never found coconut ice cream anywhere else! And then, lo and behold, a Graeter's ice cream shop opens up in jenninca's hometown of Westerville, Ohio. On a visit home, she tries it out. And there, on the menu, is the long-sought-after-but-never-found coconut ice cream! She orders it, and it's delicious!
Okay, let me stop before I go too far with this third person thing. Let's get back to the matter at hand.
Graeter's is a restaurant that serves ice cream and only ice cream. They have a long list of flavors, most of which are rather unusual. I can't remember too many of them (I order coconut EVERY time I'm there), but some that I do remember are raspberry chip, peanut butter cup, and coconut chip (as if plain coconut wasn't enough). They also have a large variety of sundaes available. You can design your own (with more than a dozen toppings to choose from--including one curiously called "bittersweet") or choose from their list of specialty sundaes.
One thing that I love about Graeter's is their waffle cones. I know that you can get waffle cones just about anywhere, but the ones at Graeter's are the best I've ever tasted. Plus, you are not limited to a waffle CONE. You can also have your ice cream served in a waffle BOWL! (There is a little plastic bowl underneath the waffle bowl just in case the cone can't hold up.) The cost for a waffle cone is $0.75 and it is well worth it. I have this sneaking suspicion that you get more ice cream with a waffle cone, anyway.
There is a place where you can sit and eat your ice cream, but many people (at least in Westerville) don't choose this option. Of course, this could be because Graeter's in Westerville is located very close to Otterbein college's campus and some pretty older neighborhoods. What better way to work off a few calories than to walk while eating?
Graeter's in Westerville is located within a two minute walk of both Friendly's and Dairy Queen. However, Graeter's is the only one of the three that boasts a line out the door nearly every day during the summer. I have to wonder if Friendly's and Dairy Queen noticed a drop in their business after Graeter's opened.
Prices are a little steep, but not outrageous. A basic cone will run you about two bucks. Add $0.75 if you want the waffle cone. A basic sundae with one topping is $3.15. Specialty sundaes run a little more than that. In my opinion, though, the cost is worth it. If you're lucky enough to have a Graeter's in your area, check it out. And when you're done, could you send a scoop of coconut on a waffle cone my way?
