Just mention Happy Joe's to anyone who's been there, and you will hear the same thing nine times out of ten... "They have the best Taco Pizza EVER!"
We recently had a one open in good old Minot (We had it on two other occasions, but it closed both times). Well I've been there a few times now, and their taco pizza is laudable, but how is everything else? Here is my review -
Crust - 9/10 - One of the most important parts of the pizza to me. At Happy Joe's they go with a slightly thinner, but very flavorful crust. It gives it a bit of a crunch, but it tastes very good. Not quite "Papa Johns Good" but close.
Ingredients - 8.5/10 - They do a very good job keeping ingredients tasting fresh, they also have a pretty good selection. You can get all the classics; ham, pepperoni, pineapple, Canadian bacon, etc. I haven't run across any instances of poor toppings yet. The only knock is they don't have any off-the-wall toppings that differentiate them from the pack.
Variety - 9/10 - You can get pizza in many different varieties. You can also get pasta, appetizers, sandwiches, salads and ice cream. So there is something here for you no matter what mood your in.
Value - 3/10 - This is where this chain suffers. It is already on the bad side of many people I work with due to the high prices for small portions. Their large measures about the same as any other in town, but there seems to be less crust cheese and toppings. You'll pay $16 for a large pizza! I can buy two larges for that at Papa John's.
The pastas are almost $7 for a tiny tin that looks like it's been microwaved. The sandwiches run $7-8 and they don't fill you up.
This is by far the least value of any pizza chain in our fair city. It is so bad I don't think I'll ever order from there again now that I've satisfied my curiosity... unless I'm really craving taco pizza.
Staff/Facilities - 7.5/10 - The facilities are nice. It's in a new building so everything is clean (we'll see how long that lasts). Nice tables, bathrooms, and the kitchen is neat and orderly. My main complaint is the staff, they just don't seem to know what is going on. My orders were messed up in some way each time I've ordered, management has never made the slightest effort to make things right (not that I'm expecting a free pizza everytime a piece of cheese is out of place). One time I ordered 2 pizzas, I even confirmed the order over the phone, I show up and there is only one made for me. No one sees a problem here except me, I tell someone I have an incomplete order and she walks off, I tell someone else and she "goes to check on it" and never comes back, a manager says, "I can make you another one, but it'll be 45 min, and you'll have to pay for it" (emphasizing that last part). I politely said one will do just fine and left.
Overall The quality of the product can not overcome the poor value. I would recommend staying away... except for the occasional order of taco pizza.
