When Just a Mouthful isn't Good Enough

Written: Jan 29, 2001 (Updated Oct 28, 2006)

Pros:The Scenery
Cons:The Food
The Bottom Line: Hooters is a mediocre restaurant, in terms of food. The scenery makes up for it a little bit, but it still isn't that good.

Hooters is a bar and grill style restaurant, best known for its waitresses who wear the signature orange and white uniforms. This chain restaurant began in Clearwater, Florida, in 1983. Currently, there are more than 250 Hooters locations in the United States, and around the world. The restaurant headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Menu Selection:

Hooters menu selection is somewhat limited, offering food items that you would expect to find in a bar and grill. The most popular item on the menu is the chicken wings, available in 10, 20, and 50 piece servings, with four different barbecue sauces to choose from (mild, medium, hot, and three mile island). The wings are ok, but nothing special.

The rest of the menu contains some good items, but most of the food is average or below. They serve fish sandwiches, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, philly cheese steak, grilled cheese sandwiches, steak sandwiches, hot dogs, salads, and fries. My favorite is the philly cheese steak. The steak sandwich is pretty good, too. But the remaining items are mediocre. Prices are average, with each platter costing between 5 and 10 dollars.

Atmosphere:

This is the reason people (mostly men) go to Hooters! The general atmosphere is like a combination of a sports bar, with a beach theme. There are several televisions, usually showing sporting events. There is also a jukebox, which often plays non- stop.

Sports and music are common themes in many bar and grill restaurants. But what sets Hooters apart from the competition is, of course, the waitresses. Dressed in their Hooters uniforms, with orange shorts and white shirts, the waitresses, exposing their cleavage for all to see, are what keep Hooters in business. This proves, once again, that sex does sell!! If you took away the concept of the Hooter girls, it would just be another bar and grill, specializing in wings, brew, and other typical bar food.

Service:

Service at Hooters is usually pretty good. The clientele is mostly male, and many of them are so fixated on watching sports, or staring at the waitresses, that they really don't care how good or how fast the service is.

Final Thoughts:

Hooters is a so- so restaurant overall. In terms of food quality and selection, it ranks below average. But when you combine the fun, scenic atmosphere, its rating improves a little bit, in the opinion of some people. There was once talk of starting federal lawsuits against Hooters, because only females can be servers which, critics claim, is sexist. The lawsuits were dropped when it was pointed out how ridiculous the concept of "Hooter Guys" would be.

Hooters is worth an occasional visit to partake in the nice scenery, if nothing else. Let's face it: the reason for this restaurants' success isn't great food; it isn't great service; and it isn't great selection. It's the women! Without them, this restaurant would close down. Personally, I prefer women with a little more meat on their bones, but I know that many men like the Hooters waitresses just the way they are.

Stop on by and see for yourself. And don't forget to visit the Hooters gift counter, where you can pick up a souvenir T-Shirt, hat, or other gift item.
