| Birdfeather's Full Review: IHOP |
I've always thought of IHOP as THE place for pancakes. I've learned that that have a huge menu and also make a decent burger and other meals. With the 24 hour service, we have been hitting them up fairly often in the last few months.
IHOP: My Thoughts & Observations
Recently, IHOP expanded their menu. They have a huge breakfast menu but also a decent lunch and dinner menu since the unveiling of the expanded menu.
We have visited several locations in the Baton Rouge area in the last 4 months and I have to say that IHOP is becoming a household word. My husband will actually make plans to go there for weekend breakfasts now. Baton Rouge used to have only one location of IHOP. We have two new locations now, one in Baton Rouge and one in Denham Springs which is fairly close to our home. We have received very good service at all 3 of the locations we have visited.
The food is good and we have found that we can count on IHOP for a good meal any time of the day or night since they are open 24 hours. Both the quality of food and service has been consistent for the last 6 months.
Dining
We have noticed that you may have to wait for a table for weekend breakfasts. At all other times, we have been greeted pleasantly by the hostess and seated quickly or with only a very short wait (5 minutes).
The dining room is usually clean with tables and booth seats wiped clean and the table ready for service. Service here is better than most other places open late at night. Our other choice is the Waffle House and you can't get inside without waiting forever for a table AND service. At IHOP the servers are friendly and don't waste any time in taking your order or getting the food to your table.
The Food
I have to say the food is much better now than years in the past. The food is actually pretty good now and not greasy like the Waffle House. Breakfast is my favorite meal here. I love the omelettes and hash browns the best. The pancakes are also good, especially with the flavored syrup! The waitress will also bring out a warmed up "Old Fashioned" syrup when she brings your food to the table.
For lunch and dinner, we have also noticed an improvement in the quality of food and how it is cooked. The hamburgers are really good, homemade taste and no grease! A couple of other favorites are the pot roast, meat loaf and pork chops. The food on the menu now is drifting toward a "home cooked" experience and this is a good thing!
The Menu
Breakfast
You can order just about anything you want for breakfast at IHOP. They have an extensive breakfast menu with many combinations. Pancakes are a big draw and they are offered plain or in specialty orders. They have strawberry, pecan, pumpkin, New York cheesecake, and more varieties to choose from.
Omelets
You will find at least 6 different omelettes to choose from. On the menu in Baton Rouge are: Spinach & Mushroom, Supreme Ham & Three Cheese, Big Steak, Country, Colorado and Big Bacon.
Combos
All your breakfast favorites are in this section and you will find a combo just for you with your personal favorites. Sausage, bacon, ham, eggs (cooked the way you want them), hash browns, pancakes, etc. are all sized up in different size combos to meet your appetite.
Other Breakfast Items
You will also find waffles, steaks, fruit, french toast and crepes on the menu as well as side items like southern classic "grits".
Lunch and Dinner Menu
The lunch and dinner menu is fairly extensive compared to several years ago. There are many choices from light to big meals.
Light Menu
Soup and salad are good healthy choices for a light meal. The salads are pretty large and filling. They offer a Clubhouse Spinach, Grilled Chicken Caesar and a Shrimp Caesar Salad. You can also get a side green salad to go with any meal or for tiny appetites. They offer one or two soups of the day, depending on how popular at your location.
You may also want to order just an appetizer if you have a small appetizer. Appetizers offered are: Popcorn shrimp and fries, crispy chicken strips, cheese straws, and onion rings. They also have a sampler which includes all of the above.
Hearty Appetites
Several home cooked meals are offered including Sirloin and T-Bone Steaks, pot roast, country fried steak, grilled tilapia and chicken strips. If you are in the mood for BQ, you will find BQ ribs and chicken on the menu. You can order these solo or a combination of both.
Home style burgers are also offered in various styles. You can order cheeseburgers, bacon burgers, bacon and egg, double burgers, or ham and egg. They also have a chicken sandwich and Philly cheese sandwich.
IHOP also has a Kid's Menu and a special menu for Senior Citizens. You will also note overall healthy items on the menu are marked with a strawberry. They also have markings for low carb, low fat, and calories!
Final Recommendation
I can't recommend this 24 hour restaurant enough. We don't have many alternatives to food after 11 pm in our town. The choices are Louie's (across town) or Waffle House which offers bad service, greasy food and a long wait for a table and another long wait for food. IHOP has picked up the ball and put in several new locations here with outstanding food and service. it is the first place we think of after a show at the Comedy Club on weekends. I give IHOP 5 Stars!
