One huge drawback of living out in the boonies is not being near an IHOP. Every time we travel, I look for IHOP signs to stop and eat there though! I am a big restaurant fan over eating at home. A burger cooked at home just is not the same to me! One wonderful thing about IHOP is that everyone in your family will be happy as there are so many offerings on the menu! Cures that fight over where to go out to eat! This restaurant is more of a family style sit down restaurant that serves your food quickly. Of course who can forget that warm maple syrup...or strawberry syrup for the kids!
Customer service:
I have been in many IHOP restaurants over the years and found the best cheerful customer service to almost non-existent customer service. One place in particular had us waiting forever with no staff on the floor to take our order. Most of the time, the staff is very conscientious and wait on us quickly. Our food comes to the table quickly as well, great for travelers who are in a hurry to get on the road again. I did not care for standing in line to be seated a couple of times. People pay at the register as they leave and this is the same place that people stand in line to be seated. More than one person should be at the front register to seat people and take payment. To go orders were put into bags sloppily spilling some contents....the styrofoam plates have a hole in the front so if it is tipped, the contents come out on my car seats! I have rarely had an order wrong although some cooks do not seem to like a change in the regular orders....such as I do not like powdered sugar on my cheese blintz and I do get that even though I say no powdered sugar! None of the staff seemed irritated at my autistic daughter's antics which is always a blessing!
Inside of the restaurant:
All of the IHOPs have been extremely clean. The bathrooms were really nice and clean with more than one stall. Most are decorated with hanging plants and have plenty of seating even for busy times during the weekends. Most are open 24 hours but some locations are not. One in particular that I know of closes at 11 pm each night. They have table and chairs or booths. The staff brings crayons and coloring paper for the children to doodle on at the table. The restaurants are very large with smoking and nonsmoking sections....but one we have been in had a completely nonsmoking restaurant. I would have loved an IHOP drive through window when the restaurant was too noisy for my child to deal with...so we could have picked our food up without leaving the car!
The food:
IHOP has a variety of food and breakfast items can be ordered in the evening as well as dinner orders in the morning. Of course most people go for the breakfast items! I myself love the cheese blintzes which are crepes filled with cheeses and topped with sour cream and either fresh cool strawberries or a warm fruit compote. Yum! (They do put powdered sugar on them as well but I ask for it to be left off.) The breakfast sampler is also a wonderful selection if you cannot choose between all of the items! It contains eggs, bacon, sausage links, ham, pancakes with fruit topping, and hash browns. Another of my favorites are the banana nut pancakes which have banana tasting pancakes with sliced fresh banana and nuts....so yummy with sausage links! For breakfast you have choices such as omelettes, french toast, many types of pancakes, country fried steak or chicken fried steak, and many other combo options! For dinner you have choices such as burgers, ribs, steaks, pot roast, fish, salads, soups, and more! For the kids, they have chocolate chip pancakes, silver dollar sized pancakes, chicken strips, and more.
But wait, there is still dessert! The ice cream sundaes here are made for sharing! Served in a huge wine-glass shaped glass, it is enough for at least two maybe three people to share! Not much to it, whipped cream, warm fudge topping, and a cherry on vanilla ice cream. Other desserts are the banana caramel cheesecake and fruit crepe. One restaurant offered a warm apple crisp with ice cream but most do not have it on the menu. Warm maple syrup is delivered to the table with your pancake order! There are senior citizen menu items of popular combos that are smaller.
The drinks:
Coffee comes in a carafe which keeps it hot and is refilled for free as many times as you empty it! They also have juices, colas, hot and cold tea, hot chocolate, chocolate milk, and milk.
All in all, a restaurant that we frequent when we see one at a pit stop to rest in our travels. Since we do not live near one now, that is the best I can do! Of course no matter who is with us, IHOP pleases the crowd as they have tons of menu items! If you see an IHOP in your travels, stop! You will not be disappointed by the food options!
