We took three kids to dinner at the IHOP tonight. This isn't one of my favorite places to go, but when you want a sit down, somewhat healthy meal without paying too much there really aren't that many places to go.
The Atmosphere - The International House of Pancakes, better known as IHOP, is definitely a family type of restaurant (unless you go in at 2 in the morning in which case it is a teenage hangout). But when it comes to places that are open 24 hours a day, this is definitely one of the more up-scale restaurants. There usually isn't a wait, unless it is Sunday after church, in which case you could be waiting 45 minutes. If you are looking for someplace to take the family, this is it. They even have some cool games on the back of the kids menus and give the kids some crayons to keep them busy.
The Servers - Overall I have usually found that the wait staff is very friendly. They will joke around with you and talk with you, unlike some places that only want to get the order and get on to the next table. And any time I've ever had a problem with my food, they have always been willing to correct it.
The Food - Usually the food is good, whether it is breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert that I am having. I went with the $6.99 herb roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and corn tonight. Other than the chicken be a little too well done, it was still good enough that I didn't send it back. My kids on the other hand, two completely polished their plates. The other only left fries, but the the Kids Chicken Tenders meal that he got was rather large, I'm not sure I could've eaten it all. Of course we can't forget their "pancakes". I'm not the biggest pancake fan, but when I do eat them I want them cooked all the way through. I've never had a problem with theirs. And my daughter finished off a rather large plate of them.
The Prices - The prices at the IHOP aren't that bad. They are comparable to Denny's. The nice thing about tonight, we were surprised with kids eat for .99 on Mondays. Two of the three qualified which was great. The adult meals usually range from $5-10 and tend to come with quite a bit of food. For a family of five, we managed to get out of there for under $30 (and that includes the tip).
Overall, the IHOP is a pretty decent place to take the family. A bit more expensive than most of the fast food joints, but also a lot healthier. And best of all, I don't have to fight with my kids to eat their meals!
