I don't eat here often, as it can be kinda greasy and gross, but like all food that is bad for you, every now and then I do have a craving for KFC!
But I found it funny to read the reviews on Epinions, for in Canada, I've never seen side orders such as mashed potatoes & gravy, baked beans, potato wedges or corn on the cob. But thank god they changed the type of fries they serve - the old ones sucked - but the new ones are great.
And the one staple they used to give you in Canada, they don't anymore, are those biscuits, which starts with a "b" and it's really sad that they don't serve them anymore.
But one thing Canada shares with the US are the stupid corny ads featuring a cartoon Cornel who tries so hard to be hip and cool. And doesn't it look like he's trying??? And don't you almost feel sorry for him (that is you would if you weren't so busy being sick of the whole idea behind him). Well, the honest truth is, he's not hip and cool. He's just plain annoying! If I had never eaten at KFC and I had no idea that I enjoyed original recipe chicken, I'd never go there. His character and the way he is portrayed gives me a negative perception towards KFC as being very uncool and borderline chilly. And it's not just because I've always leaned towards the advertising of products that emphasize heritage and history, as well as what's new. But by portraying Co. Sanders as a cartoon, I feel KFC violates and disrespects it's own heritage. I do believe that you can still have a fresh, clean, hip look while maintaining and respecting your own company heritage. Currently, KFC is not doing this.
But I digress. Because I love the main staples of KFC's menu - especially the original recipe chicken. I usually get a two or three piece meal which also comes with a drink, fries and if I want, a salad. But no biscuits or rolls though, not anymore. Our family used to get the bucket and large fries with salad and they used to give you one of those frozen chocolate cakes (I don't know if they still do as I haven't bought a family pack in a long time, but they might have it - or something equivalent).
Recently, when I've been driving and I'm hungry, I love getting the popcorn chicken combo, which comes with a drink, a side of fries and the popcorn chicken. And in some locations, they throw in a bag of Crunchy M&Ms. And the nice thing about this combo is it's easy to eat when your driving. Just put the bag on the passenger seat, and it's easy to reach into for some fries or popcorn chicken. Then when I'm stopped at a light I can slug back a bit of the drink.
I also don't mind the chicken sandwhich deals, which, again, come with fries and a drink. They're great! And I've never tried any of the other specialty chickens - such as BBQ or Honey Chicken. I've always been one to stick to the original recipe, but for a short time a few years ago, I had an extra crispy fetish. But not anymore. Just original for me thanks.
Overall, the stores are clean, the staff is friendly. One location that was near the home I lived in, in the suburbs, the one lady has worked there ten years and she's always nice, honest and friendly.
So that's what I like about KFC. Bottom line: (aside from the current ad campaign) it's all right =)
But like most fast food joints, I don't eat there often, only once or twice every other month. But I do like variety, and I like checking out what the different chains are up to from time to time. And I like KFC.
